With a few accessories and a change in lighting, this bedroom makeover is as gorgeous as it is affordable! Photo: Maison24
A bedroom makeover that is both glamorous and budget-friendly? Yes, please. This cozy bedroom sits on a cobblestone street in the heart of the West Village in an apartment formerly owned by an artist, who enjoyed the space for the abundance of natural light.
Not long ago, a west coast-based couple purchased the home as a pied-a-terre, but they needed a little bit of help finishing the space. So, they called in the design duo of Maison24, Allison Julius and Louis Marrawhich, to help them makeover the space. The room's re-design focused on the couple's love of Dorothy Draper's modern-baroque style.

What a difference a light fixture can make! Photo: Maison24
Maison24 also replaced the original hanging light with a much more elegant hand-blown Venetian glass chandelier. The new light fixture is a focal point, rather than an afterthought, in the re-designed space.
Other highlights of this sumptuous space include ottomans with Lucite bases and Tony Duquette Gemstone Smoke tufted seats, a vintage Dorothy Draper-style mirror from the Eden Roc Hotel in Miami and plush white shag area rugs add a crisp, modern edge.

Granted the second picture does make the room look better. The decor is much nicer. But as far as making it look BRIGHTER, all they did was take the picture at a time of day when the sun was shining through the windows, when on the first picture the photo was obviously taken at a time when the sun was not shining through! If they ahd taken the pictures at the same time of day, then either #1 would have looked brighter, or #2 would have looked darker, depending on the time.
ReplySomeone explain to me how this is "budget friendly"? They hire a designer and use luxury fabrics, materials and put in lighting with Venetian glass?? PLEASE!! Budget friendly to the everyday person is shopping at places like Target, Walmart, rummage sales, garage sales or just simply making do with what they have and finding new ways to use them. Let's see some real make overs that are truly budget friendly.
ReplyYeah what you said. It always amazes me that they feel we are going to fall for that crap that this is a budget makeov er. Who's budget??!! Let's see them do something my budget.
Yes the time of day does make a difference, I also noticed they painted the trims white. The extra light also makes the room brighter. I would've added a little more color. To me the color is a little bland.
ReplyYuck!
ReplyLook closely...it's not even the same room. Ceiling beam and crown molding are totally different!
ReplyYes, it's the same room. If you look real closely, the way the painted the trim and walls, etc make it look different. Plus they took it from a little closer to the bed than they did the first one.
But I agree with everyone. This is by no means budget friendly, and the room needs more color! I don't like it at all!
You have a keen eye my friend --it appears to be a similar but not the same room unless the budget designers adjusted all the molding also.
Oh Pllleeeaaasse
I liked the old light fixture and color pattette better
ReplyI liked the old floor and light fixture better. The design doesn't do much for the original architecture of the room.
ReplyIt looks very "white washed" to me. A colorful window treatment would have been better than the halloween colors.
ReplyWho the hell covers up hard wood floors with a nasty run? Those floors were beautiful....
ReplyOK - as a designer I think this room is cold and uninviting. Super white walls and trim combined with black floors and gray accents is dull and boring. And I agree, it definitely is not budget friendly!! I pride myself on helping clients get the most bang for their buck - and that includes some of the sources mentioned: thrift shops, fleas markets, etc.
ReplyThe old light fixture was MUCH more beautiful than the piece of new-age crap in the second photo. And covering up the luscious hardwood floors was a crime ! Most of us commenting here seem to have much better taste than this so-called "desiger". I'm just sayin'......
ReplyI think "drool-worthy" is a bit much. Granted, the room looks much better and brighter. A good paint job and carpet can do wonders to modernize any room. Not to mention different bedding. Not feeling that light fixture - - too gaudy. Looks like something they dragged out of an old hotel they were tearing down.
ReplyI want the old fixture for my home.
ReplyIt's a great room and monocromatic cold white on the walls will make any room bright. I personally don't like the re-make but I didn't pay for it. I think a lot could have been done to liven it up on much less of a budget. Touching the floors and then adding carpet just makes no sense to me.
ReplyWhen am I going to start drooling over the room?? How long is it supposed to take!!!
ReplyThat nappy rug is going to be more than disgusting in about a month! There is no way to get lint out of that thing.
ReplyI love the couples pillow. Wonder where that come from? I would like to order one.
ReplyPlease put a reference to those things displayed in the pic.
Thanks.
