Last night, ShelterPop and DIY Life editors were some of the lucky ones who got to attend The Home Depot's "Do-It-Herself" Workshop in New York City. The event, featuring Martha Stewart Living Paint, demonstrated decorative painting techniques. Hey, who couldn't use a how-to on painting two-tone striped walls? We sure could.
Martha's paint line launched at The Home Depot just last month so it made perfect sense that the featured products were hers. What we did not expect was a high-heel clad Martha to stroll in wearing a bright-orange apron ready to demo painting techniques. "Always paint in high heels," she said jokingly. "You can reach up higher that way."

We've extracted some highlights and our personal favorites from the night. Having never met Martha before, the general consensus on our team was a big, lovely thumbs up. She was very entertaining and seems remarkably down-to-earth, despite all those houses she owns! Ah, to be Martha.
And now: Pearls of wisdom from the woman herself -- plus some random facts and tid bits.
Ballet Slipper Pink (left); Cornbread (right).
1. Martha's color inspirations right now
Having just redecorated her East Hampton, New York home, Martha has some new-found color inspirations. Rugs, she says, were always a no-go in the East Hampton house since it's really a beach house. That all changed during this redesign and she has since introduced a golden-gray sisal rug in her living area. Those tones are complimented by colors similar to those in Martha's bedroom -- a yellow and a pink. In this case, it is Cornbread on the walls and Ballet Slipper Pink on the ceiling (both shown above).
2. "Be happy with gray!" says Martha
When DIY Life editor, Kristine Solomon, asked which shade of gray would look decorative, not dreary, on her apartment walls, Martha replied with a definitive "Sharkey Gray," explaining that her own daughter had her entire apartment painted this color. Kristine gratefully thanked Martha, explaining that her own mother will officially have to stop criticizing her choice of wall paint because, hey, "Martha picked this for me." Martha's reply? "Well, mothers don't know everything."
3. Neutral does not mean boring
She calls neutral paint colors the "Super Naturals" because she believes that you don't have to go bold to make an impact. Try using a few different neutral shades in your home and you'll see how nicely they blend and flow from room to room. It's easy, she says, to grow tired of bold shades like green and purple in your home. Maybe this is why us ShelterPop editors are always repainting our homes? Color addicts.
4. Use low-tack tape when painting
It's simple. The less tack, the easier it is to remove. If your tape is still pretty tacky, here's a fantastic industry secret: Put some lint on your tape. Stick it along your smock while you're working. It will make it less tacky. Also, never leave tape on over night because it could get stuck to the wall and tear.
5. Treat ceilings differently than walls
When it comes to ceilings, choose a glossier finish (semi-gloss or glossy). Walls should get flat or eggshell finishes. Martha suggests using color on ceilings for an unexpected pop. But, she says, never paint a low ceiling a dark shade. It will only make the space feel smaller. If you have a high ceiling, though, you can go dark.
6. Finishes, finishes
The walls in high-activity areas like the kitchen and bathroom should have more of a sheen. Bedrooms and living rooms are best suited with flat finishes.
7. A furry situation
Our favorite bit from the night was learning that Martha and her team have used the many shades of color found in her cat's fur as inspiration. They say inspirations can come from anywhere. Hearing this really drills that point home.

Ballet slipper pink and Cornbread - I am sure that there are tons of "wannabe's" out at Home Depot today - has anyone considered telling the woman that nobody paints in heals come on.... and the color choices -Might better be named childhood dreams and midnight snacks in her case.... she needs to hang the slippers and the paintbrush up if you ask me...........
ReplyWell, Terri, nobody asked you! Martha is going strong and she looks good doing it. She started her business by herself and has run it to become a wonderful, very profitable empire. We should all be so ambitious. Yes, she has had some very good advice and help along the way. Nothing wrong with that. She has done everything right. Even going to jail for a short stint did not hurt her or her business. More power to her!
ReplyDitto, Barb. A big DITTO!
(work on your jealousy, Terri!)
Really Terri whats your problem and FYI if you are going to post a comment you should be able to at least spell simple words (heals?)
Replymartha stewart is a joke !
ReplyIf Martha Stewart is a joke, she is the only one who is laughing..... all the way to the bank!
Martha is delightful and I love everything she does. I have been watching her for years.
ReplySorry Suzanne I would rather misspell a word than be an ex-con and for all of you and anyone else that comments from here on let it be known that no, I am not jealous and if all of you believe that these are all of her own ideas I really do feel sorry for you all, you know Santa and the Tooth Fairy are better bets... and I am sure that neither has a record . Don't you realize that she has a staff of god knows how many, feeding ideas to her on a daily basis. Power and Wealth are all she is about kiddies.... get it straight, do some reading beyond an AOL clip for God's sake. As for my decorating ideas I use my own idea's and imagination (something which alot of people lack) otherwise there would not be a worldwide business for it..... Having said that - it does not make Martha the Queen of it....
ReplyOh you are so right. How could Martha Stewart be a professional on everything in the world? And working in heels? Gagg me with a fork.
Terri, people like you are very sad. As a woman, why would you want to see another woman in business fail? Because she lied about a selling stock? When the ENTIRE WALL STREET is corrupt? I'll tell you what--her stint in jail was the shot in the arm her company needed--it made her look more human, which is what her company needed. Her company is doing better now than before she went to prison, and she's become an American icon. I for one am glad to see a woman who has worked so hard for 30 years continue to stay at the top. There's something really sad about people who need to see others fall--it says a lot about you and your unhappiness with your life.
Mercy, Terri! Since when did Martha's sins become higher ranked than the rest of ours? You really have a 'thing' for people with records, it would appear. What's that about getting the log out of our own eye before getting the mote out of others' eyes??
Martha is Martha, and who cares if she promotes her wares in high heels, lol. The Martha Stewart line is ( cough, cough) Martha's line and some people will like it and some people will not. In reality it makes no difference about who's line it is because in the end we all end up buying what we like anyway, so why not check out Martha's Line. I personally buy at Home Depot and Lowes and I follow nobody's line but my own, lol. I look for good paint and value for my money. Design ideas, and or color ideas, I get from magazines or movies. I also look for made in America.
ReplyI love her everything she does I am her tv fan watching her for years and subcribing her monthly subcription until I became a full time rver that I have to stop subcribing but I still buy her subscriptions from stores I can't help it being a Martha Stewart 's t.v.fan and subscriber for years I'm a crafty rver ! When I'm settled then subscribing my renewals again and always ....She's my favorite her everything " A to Z" not only cooking issues... I'm hoping someday I'll be in her show to watch her LIVE SHOW give me a buzz giggle!
ReplyMartha never claimed that everything was her" own "ideas. She has always acknowledged the ideas of others be it in life or on her staff. She gives us great tips and inspiration. And has built an empire that just keeps growing. And when you put your name on your company ,you damn well better suround yourself with the best people you can find to share your vision. And to all the nay sayers out there. You must have watched her at some point or you wouldn't have a comment. Now get out there and show the world what you have to offer. Inspire people with your talent not your tongue. good luck to you all. Martha... keep on keepin' on . BRAVO!!
She is an ex con.
ReplyMartha may have gone to jail but I have always believed there are only two kind of pepole
as far as jail is concerned THE CAUGHT AND THE UNCAUGHT
Please keep that woman out of Home Depot. She's not a good spokesperson for any organization. She's a jailbird with no talent and a huge ego. Whenever I see her face I want to run in the other direction. Look what she did for Kmart.... didn't they have to file bankruptcy?
ReplyMartha Stewart is a hag and a faker. She should have spent a few more years in the joint.
ReplyWay to go Martha! Most of my house is painted in soft sunset colors of golds and peaches. My dining room ceiling is glowing soft lavender that contrasts with the soft gold. With some soft green accents and all my houseplants and it looks like garden room at sunset or sunrise. After 20 years in the military with white walls to make moving easier, when I retired I wanted some color in my life. I realized that I liked being outdoors more than inside. I liked blue skies and sunsets with green trees and the colors in some flowers. Now our floors are slate brown or limestone tile colors. The ceilings are either blue, lavender, or something in between. With glossy ceilings it reflects items hung near it like a reflecting pool. Don't bash it until you have tried it. I even came up with a technique to turn boring white woodwork into something that looks like real slate, thanks to Ralph Lauren paints a few years ago. Great for hiding dirt on inside access doors to the garage where the dudes go in and out with dirty hands.
ReplyWow......seems as tho Terri (first comment) got up on the wrong side of the bed today! Am thinking maybe if her ceiling was brighter, (like Marthas), maybe her mood would be too! Some people are so damn critical. And, am assuming she doesnt wear "heals"....(it's "heels") painting. Apparently, she wanted to look good for the camera........geez!
