Trend watching? More like trend-waving; five design fads we'll happily bid farewell to.

Your editors here at ShelterPop have a serious fixation for all-things design (you think?). Day in and day out we study the world of home decor. So, it should come as no surprise that we might get a little (read: extremely) tired of certain design fads. We'd like to to highlight some trends of the recent past that seem to be holding on for dear life. Some that, frankly, we'd like to see disappear deep into the design vault of trends passed.

Mustache-themed napkin rings and glasses are playful -- but have we had enough? Photos: Modern Dose and Bread and Badger

1. Shave it Off
Attribute it to boredom, perhaps, but there will always be at least one out-of-left-field trend every year. The weird and wacky trend of 2009: Mustaches translated into home accessories. Modern Dose's mustache napkin holders were a huge hit. And we didn't help the cause by highlighting the trend back in September. But they've had their deserved day in the sun, and it's high time to make room for a new facial-follicle fad, according to Jaime Derringer: "While I think mustaches are amusing, don't people see that beards are way more awesome?"

OK, so maybe owls have that extra cute factor to keep them holding on -- but maybe we should cut back just a little. Photos: Anthropologie and Flickr, a.d.miller

2. Give the Hoot a Boot
There's one trend that has been holding on and doesn't seem to be subsiding -- but we couldn't give a hoot. (Yeah, I said it.) Owls, birds and other frequent fliers are at the top of Erin Loechner's list for decor trends that need to "fly, fly away," she says. These feathered friends have been holding strong but lets make some room for another animal – lemur, perhaps?

3. Time to Recycle It
Perhaps Ikea is to blame for pushing paper lanterns into the mainstream decor market -- and they've definitely had their time to shine. However, in our humble opinion, we'll save the paper lanterns for Japanese restaurant, shall we?

4. Alert PETA
Speaking of animal decor, we all love animals -- but the taxidermy trend is taking things a bit too far. "Enough already!" says Laura Fenton. "Personally, I always thought that hanging dead animals on the wall was a little creepy, but at this point it's also just a worn-out trend. If I never see a mounted deer head again, I'll be thrilled.

5. Bounce It to the Curb
Modern furniture manufacturers always find a way to surprise us, and the rubber-coated furniture by JSPR (and other designers to follow) admittedly caught our attention. But, your ShelterPop editors agree: From chairs to chandeliers, this trend's bounce rate is long overdue.

How about chickens and ducks on everything in the kitchen??????? And I love American but a kitchen with red, white and blue flags and eagles on everything is so over the top. Don't forget the collections of anything all thru the house........UGH!!!! Too much is too much!!!!!!!!

"Mustache napkin rings"????? I don't think I have EVER used any napkin rings ever, much less with mustaches on them! What a gross idea. Along those lines, can we get rid of the fat-ass mustachioed "French chef" and grapes n' wine decor? If I lived in Paris in the 50's and owned a bistro, yeah, maybe, but those ugly posters and wine bottles are out of place anywhere else. "Live, Laugh, Love" plaques to hang on the wall are another dopey thing to give the heave ho, found in the same catalogs with clothing that blats "Life Is Good". Enough, already! Luckily, the geese n' ribbons kuntry kute has been over for decades now, people, if you have cannisters, vases, and curtains with this dead decorating trend, even the thrift store doesn't want them because they'll be sittin on the shelves there for years .

    Dear Marlene,
Save money, go to your library, they have tons of decorating tips of all styles, and eras. Keep in mind, just a suggestion, design on a dime is a joke, what is your comfort zone, style can be the best and newest decor, because you designed it for yourself, by yourself. Did you ever notice, all of HGTV shows most are filmed in Canada and rarely do they factor in the price of labor. The electricians they use vary from state to state, code to code. So enjoy yourself, start using what you have and sketch it out on paper. If it doesn't bring a smile, start with a new drawing. I am sure you will do just find. Congrats when someone asks, your designer is MMar from Long Beach, where can we get in touch with her. Me from DG
