What people want from their kitchen today: "A great place to hang out in and that means a comfortable space," says top American kitchen designer Mick De Giulio, the man who designed the training kitchens for the Wolf and Sub-Zero appliance company headquarters and New York showroom.

And here's some news: De Giulio, regarded as Chicago's kitchen design guru, is set to achieve rock star status when his signature line of kitchen sinks for Kallista (Kohler's high-end fixture brand) debuts in December. His new book, "Kitchen Centric," (Balcony Press) is "part fantasy, part art book and part field guide " and due out this fall.

Those three reasons are why we wanted to ask Mick De Giulio for smart kitchen update ideas -- ways to get a new look without major renovations. Lucky for us, he offered many more.

"The number one impetus to start a kitchen update project is to replace outdated or broken-down appliances," he explains. "But a kitchen [project] will be expensive even if you're doing a small facelift so it's important to decide where to put your money to get the most impact."

That's why he stresses planning. Before you start, ask yourself three questions: Why am I doing the project? What do I want it to look like? What's on my wish list? Even if you can't afford everything you'd like, "in a kitchen you run into a domino effect. Planning is often overlooked and that can have long-term ramifications," he says. Don't just jump into making changes.

Naturally, there's one kitchen area where it's necessary to tread lightly. Don't mess with the floor. "I've seen people replace a floor by putting a new one in over the old. That locks in the appliances which become impossible to remove. Another don't: area rugs. "You could do it, but you have too may spills and bacteria. I like it clean on the floor."

Once you determine a general direction for your kitchen update, here are eight areas to consider, and why.
