Delicate patterns on organic denim: dreamy. Photo: Eskayel.
You know how ShelterPop feels about animals as a design motif (we don't love it.) But we're making an exception for the ethereal portraits of polar bears from Brooklyn-based fine artist-turned-decor maven, Shanan Campanaro. After finding success re-purposing her watercolors into wallpaper designs, Campanaro's now brought a softer touch to her art, turning her designs into fairy-like throw pillows with subtle glamour in The Natives Capsule, $175 for 18" and $290 for 25" at Eskayel.
While we're smitten by the kaleidoscopic designs and striking images that seem to change as you get closer to the pillows, we can't ignore the admirable Eco-slant to her work: Campanaro's watercolors were originally intended to draw attention to the threatened species. "In hundreds of years, if humans don't take care of our natural habitat, we could be searching for food at our own peril in strange landscapes -- just like the polar bear that swims so far out to sea he drowns before he finds a desperately needed meal," she says. In honor of the sad reality behind the adorable animals, she's donating 20% of proceeds from The Natives Capsule collection to Polar Bears International.
Of course the donation means more when you know that the production means are also in the right place -- all pieces of The Natives collection are made-to-order (so no excess waste), they're produced locally in the New York area and the pillows are 100% organic denim. They've got a pretty small ecological footprint and a sizable positive impact.
And speaking purely from an aesthetic standpoint: they're pure art for your sofa.
