Until recently, if someone merely mentioned the word "wicker" when talking about furniture, I couldn't help but cringe. Thoughts of chintzy sunroom seating and mid-80s-Palm-Beach-style patios (read: horrific) came to mind. Even when the material first went modern the styles failed to impress -- uber straight lines, block-like structures and little in the way of "wow" factor.
But lately I've noticed a new wave of wicker that plays well into the modern home while fulfilling the more traditionalist desire for some curves. Sure, the traditional style still reigns when it comes to dressing our decks and patios for sunnier months. But modern design lovers can hope that, with this new wave of wicker wares, wear-resistant decorating will be that much more exciting.
Case in point: CB2's modern outdoor Resort set is a sleek addition to a summer patio. Check out ten more mod wicker pieces below:

That horrific wicker you describe lends warmth and charm to seaside patio's and sunrooms.
ReplyIt will be around long after your boxy sets with thin cushions are sold at yard sales.
I am a grandma and I find this headline very insulting!! Alison did you also write the boring article on pilates???
Whether you get new furniture, you'll still need to paint and make other changes. The two combined can give you a whole new atmosphere! Http://www.bestdecktips.com
this stuff is ugly and cheap looking , gross
Replyditto
whoa, that's pretty fug. no one in their right mind would pay for crappy stuff like that.
ReplyHorrible. This stuff is so cubist. Industrial. Lacking in warmth or humanity. Blah. Just waiting for this Jetson trend to be gone before I update my furniture. It's boring and cold.
ReplyI will have to agree that this new wicker is really ugly and unfriendly. Why would someone buy this ugly stuff? I also agree that it will be yard sale kill in a short time!!!
ReplyGive me Grandma's wicker anyday. It had elegance & an inviting beauty about it. This stuff is awful!
Replywow this stuff looks constipated, and one would most certainly need a heating pad for their backsides and back after sitting in it too long. As far as the vases and containers, boring dust mite huts.
ReplyThe person who wrote this article must have personal issues with her grandma or grandmas. Maybe she did not get enough of those yummy grandma cookies.
Oh well sounds like a good subject for her next counsling session, her first question could be,: Why do I blame wicker on Grandmas? She is as twisted as the wicker on this page...
I feel sad for anyone who missed out on having the memories this type of furniture brings to my mind. They cannot recall the "heart felt memories" of "days-gone-by" where this style wicker gathered family members to share summer night chats late into the wee hours of the morning; if they were lucky enough they could hear the sound of waves coming from the sea not far off.
ReplyNostalgia does not seem to be appreciated by many this days!
This stuff is UGLY! Give me "grandma's wicker" any day!
