At first thought, we'll admit, we thought this house was kind of wacky. But then we started thinking about all the times that having such a bold, fiercely happy house could be an asset.
• Giving directions. "Just head straight down Broadway, and ours is the house that's painted like a rainbow."
• No one -- no one -- could ever accuse you of being grumpy. Or boring.
• You'd never have to worry about matching your flowers to the color of the house -- you'll be able to match just about everything!
• Just driving up to your house would make you smile (if not laugh).
• Two words: Community celebrity. Just try to go to the pharmacy without someone shouting "Hey, Rainbow-House guy!" and giving you a high-five.
• Who knows -- maybe there's a pot of gold buried under here?
That's our shortlist -- and we're counting on you to add your own ideas in the comments! (And don't forget to weigh in in the poll.)
What about you?

Reader comments (Page 1 of 2)
To the guy or gal who wonders who "let them" do it: the United States Constitution let them do it. Whether you think it's ugly or a political statement, it is no different than some people's reaction to seeing Barc-a-Loungers and satellite dishes, full-sized refrigerators, rusting cars and peeling paint on the porches and in the yards of people who can apparently afford 1000 channels of television but can't seem to find the money to fix an eyesore. Unless rational zoning laws prohibit it, people are generally free to use and "decorate" their property as they choose. When I read comments like yours I almost automatically think I pay more income and property taxes than the author does and they benefit indirectly from my labor while trashing me and people like me. I am okay with that. At some point during my lifetime I am confident that your voice will be drowned out by those who are unafraid to know and be cordial to people who are different from themselves.
Bright, cheerful and tastefully done .... two thumbs up : )
ReplyTie dye is back! It's in Haight-Asbury, right?
ReplyLOL! LOVE IT!
A paint scheme like that has to be difficult to maintain. Big disappointment in that they did not carry the paint scheme to the whole exterior.
ReplyIt is the pride rainbow colors, well done and it makes a statement.
ReplyI know the owner... His name is Roy G Biv
Replythat funny does any one no what ROY. G BIY means
Too funny. I learned ROYGBIV in middle school.
Sorry, I like serenity, this is a Sherwin Williams paint chart nightmare. Okay to passby but not to live in!
ReplyYes, It's R.O.Y.G.B.I.V........Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet, the colors of the rainbow.

ReplyTotally charming. I don't think I would have the courage to do it but it reminds me of friend's mother who writes childrens' books, one of which is titled "The Painter's House", about a sweet man who did not have much money but saved part of the last gallon of paint of each house he worked on and, to save money, painted his house with all the different colors left over from his work. He was teased for it but it has, of course, a happy ending and a great message for young kids. It is likely out of print at this point but the author is Mary Radloff, a retired reading teacher in Upstate New York.
Seems to me we should simply enjoy the beautiful colors of the rainbow for what they are, not what they were commandeered to mean or imply. I love the house, but the whole exterior would have been a bit much.
ReplyYa gotta admit, its not your typical boring exterior paint job.
ReplyI think it looks fantastic. And it doesn't mean the home owners are gay. And even if they were, who cares. The house just makes ya wanna smile. Wish it was next door to my house.
Acutally I have always wanted to paint my house like the surrounding area. Sort of make it disappear into the woodwork, so to speak.
ReplyI'd take it over the 'Sanford and Son' dump next door to me.
ReplyLooks alright to me, live and let live........
