The vibrant decor at this Caribbean hotel is blinding.
Beachfront hotels often incorporate a white or neutral palette to place more attention on the stunning nature right outside. At Mount Cinnamon, a boutique hotel on the island of Grenada, designers did the opposite when preparing to debut the property two years ago. Instead of sand-kissed neutrals, they worked the color wheel and devised interiors that mimic the island's history as a source of exotic spices.
Since many of us fear decorating with such extreme amounts of color, we wanted to give you a peek inside the hotel -- it proves that there's nothing to be afraid of. Plus, here are a few tips to inspire you to add pops of color to your own home.
1. Choose brightly colored appliances and gadgets.
No blah white fridge here! Next to granite countertops in one of the hotel's suites is a bright-orange fridge. It would certainly bring a smile to your face when you're making coffee in the morning. If you're a little hesitant to go all out with an orange fridge, how about a red toaster or a bright-green French press? Echo that color choice in a set of coffee mugs, cloth napkins or cereal bowls, and you'll make your morning rush a bit more fun.

2. Don't limit yourself to just two colors.
It's very easy when decorating a room or small space to spend a lot of time poring over colors -- and thinking you have to settle on two. Wrong! As you can see in the above photo, turquoise, orange and lime-green work very well together. You might even say that this is a cozy place to eat lunch. And notice that not all of the chairs are of the same color. Some tables are flanked by turquoise chairs, others by lime-green or orange chairs. Symmetry is overrated!

3. The perfect match: white + lots of color.
Yes, we know that we just talked about choosing at least two colors, but here's another fun option: Add a very bright color to an all-white kitchen. If you want to attract a lot of attention to an appliance -- such as this green fridge -- or a vase or a piece of furniture that's a shocking color, white objects will help the color really stand out.

4. Color spices up the bedroom.
There's a temptation when decorating a bedroom to cultivate a relaxing, meditative spot to slumber. That's one approach, but here's one that will get your blood flowing: Wrap yourself in colorful sheets and add coordinating colorful art and furnishings. It will bring a smile, even if you don't feel like getting up that morning.

5. Color up the table.
Tableware is among the easiest ways to introduce color. When you're not using those canary-yellow or fuchsia plates and bowls, they can be tucked into your kitchen cabinets or stacked in your kitchen as decor. Or choose colorful chairs to pair with your dining-room table and leave the rest of it neutral, as the table setting above demonstrates. I swear food just tastes better when served on a colorful platter.

If a decorator every suggested this type decor for my home (even my beachfront vacation home) she'd be fired in an instant. There's a difference in creating a certain ambience in a setting that will be temporary (hotel guests), and creating an atmosphere that will be pleasing to a home owner for years. This hotel is a great example. While I'd enjoy it for a week long stay, I would tire of it quickly after that. What might look good in a hotel can look cheap and tacky in a home.
ReplyOh, c'mon!!! Think of what a happy person you would be with colors like that to brighten up every one of your days!!! I love it!
I definitely wouldn't want it in my house but it's very uplifting & fun which is what a vacation is supposed to be. intead of all the normal carbon copy blah blah drab boring hotels
I totally love this!!! I would love to decorate my apartment like this!!! I would love to live with that type of atmosphere all year long!!! Once I move back to the beach/ocean, I will docorate my new apartment with all those vibrant colors. I hate dull, drab, boring colors and I hate where I currently live now. I will be so happy to be back by the ocean and I won't have any problems decorating my new place with those colors in the pictures above!!! Yes!!!
ReplyHow cool is that...... I would really enjoy staying somewhere like this.it is a wonderland of color.
ReplyI ABOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!! So Bright, Contemporary and Happy!!!! Wish I had the money to decorate my place like this!
Replyabosolutely love it! its alive and full of life you could never wake up and expect nothing other than a great day with all the brightness going on in your home, and even a bad day outside you can't help but smile with relief once you walk in your door. if i had the money i'd hire the decor professional to do it up in my place.
ReplyThe Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan is decorated by Carleton Varney just as boldly as this boutique hotel in the Caribbean. Go to www.grandhotel.com to see pictures of it for yourself.
ReplySimply awesome!!! People are afraid to work with the color spectrum....not here.
ReplyThat's original....
Not a "stone aged euro bland" atmosphere, but bright, vibrating with the look of "no rain in sight!" The caribbean is a place of beauty and culture vibes everywhere, then why not in its decor? LOVE THIS!
What a wonderful idea.....a great way to have an upbeat, cheerful home.
ReplyLooks like Target puked all over it...
ReplyI think this decor is gorgeous!! Pastels are boring. This place looks like it would be fun to spend time there. I love the colored fridges... I wonder if you can actually buy those?
ReplyI have to agree with PMLara on this one..... fine in a hotel, but won't wear well in a home. But more than that, did you notice in the kitchen pictures that there is cabinet space open for a microwave, but not one there. The first pic even has a mirror backsplash under where the microwave should be, but nothing where it would be behind it.... instead it is sitting on the counter. Hotel, Shmotel....
Replynot everyone puts their microwave above the stove - - lots of people keep them on the counter.
I love it. I have always wanted a tropical island home, just so I could decorate with bold colors.
ReplyBright splashes of color are all the rage. Take a stroll down the home decor aisle of any department store. Economists and the fashion industry take surprising cues from one another: a gloomy economic picture means a fashion palette full of drab colors--earth tones, somber olive, tan, brown, beige, gray. Vibrant colors reflect optimism. I'm always attracted to deep, intensely saturated jewel tones, cooled with gray or enflamed with white, depending on season. A hotel is just the place to jazz up with the dazzle of beach-brights. I thought it well done, with the visual purity of solids and white uncluttered with stripes and florals. For 100% of my waking hours? No, I do need to retreat to something more zen--like the beach. Brilliant. I want to go there.
ReplyI like it a lot! Feels warm and friendly.
Replyi decorated a bathroom once with all those vibrant colors and i must admit that every morning when i woke up to go shower as soon as i looked in it it made me smile and feel so awake and ready to start my day. i dont know if i'd do every room in my place like this but i might try it in more than one room.
