HGTV is giving away a brand new NYC apartment, custom-designed by Vern Yip. Interested? Take a look inside.
In their latest mega-giveaway,
HGTV has teamed up with
The Residences at W New York -- Downtown to offer every city-lover's dream come true: A custom-designed downtown apartment with a view!
Vern Yip, who we all love and know from the network, considered the contest's title -- "Urban Oasis" -- and theme of contrasts as his main inspiration. "New York is a city of contrasts, " says Yip. "There are 19th- and 20th-century buildings right next to contemporary skyscrapers, and it works. All of this contrast ultimately leads to harmony. This apartment represents that harmony, and is a place to relax and unwind after a busy day."
Want a sense of some of that contrast? Start in the foyer: Marble lions from the 1860s mimic the grand beasts that guard the New York Public Library and work wonderfully by a more obscure photograph of the library's famous reading room by German photographer
Reinhard Gorner. The new lucite console table holds jars of candy and paperweights from NYC artist
Laura Graham.
Straight ahead is the kitchen, where Yip strives to capture the diversity of New York City with pieces that vary in style and contrast, but work together in a functional way. Our favorite part of that: The multifunctional dining room table. "You can use it to prep items for cooking, you can use it as a desk (thanks to the hidden power strip built into the legs) and even for storage -- the legs have doors and act as mini cabinets." The glass table top top and
Philippe Stark Louis Ghost chairs mimic the transparent, reflective surfaces of skyscrapers, and work well against a rug from
ABC Carpet & Home and a geometric 1970s Italian crystal chandelier from
Las Venus. The colorful
Andrew Moore photograph of the Staten Island Ferry gives us a quiet moment of solitude, unique in a big city like New York.
The kitchen opens to the lovely, bright living room, which has fantastic views of New Jersey, the Hudson river and Lady Liberty herself. The space serves a multitude of purposes, but manages to look neat, chic and organized. The gray sofa from
Dune opens up to a full size bed, so it can comfortably sleep guests. The
Haus Interior lamps add a another grey texture to the room, along with the incredible black and white
Matthew Pillsbury photograph of the Museum of Natural History's famous dioramas, taken with a long lens exposure. The unusual gryphon sculpture is actually an old iron flag base from the 20th century, found at
Demolition Depot.
The bedroom brings in architectural elements from the urban jungle, especially in the wall behind the bed, which is meant to look like the ice block, limestone foundation of many New York buildings. The two 1910 keystone pediments that flank the bed are from a demolished Harlem brownstone and sit on pedestals that act as end tables and storage. "The great storage features really make the apartment seem serene and orderly," says Yip. "It really keeps with that oasis theme."
After looking through, what do you think? Would you want to live in this apartment...for free? We sure would! You can get an on-air tour from Vern Yip himself during the HGTV Urban Oasis 2010 special on Monday, September 6, 2010, at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT. Get all the contest details at

beautiful
ReplyThis apartment is absoutely hidious. Whoever wins this should either sell it or completly gut it and start over. I don't know who this Vern Yip is but he has absoutely no taste in design or decoration.
ReplyVern Yip is a highly qualified interior designer, I love watching his shows. He is always giving himself to worthy causes. I find the NYC apartment absolutely beautiful.
I totally agree! I would start in the kitchen and throw the oh so very ugly plastic chairs away and get new cabinets. Oh, and the kitchen table would be at the curb also. I would love to have the apartment but would need a few thousand to make it livable for me.
Wow you guys are right! I thought the comments were kind of harsh at first, because i really like Vern. But wow looking at it again I would get rid of most of that stuff.
I second the motion. It looks like an office setting and not at all warm .......cold and hard...Double YUK.
Apparently, you know nothing about style or New York. I can't believe that you don't know who Vern Yip is.. This is a wonderful apartment. Maybe the table and chair can go, but the rest is classice NY.
Wow 1.5 million for that place,,,,thank you God for letting me live in the country!!!
ReplyIts a butt ugly plexiglass and crome nightmare!!! And no i didnt enter the contest,,,couldnt ever see myself in a place like that,,,the designern flubbed that one for sure!!!!
First, I would love to own this apartment in NYC. Second, they can keep the furnishings. Vern, what in the world has happened to you? This so called 'Design' is a mess! How could you take this apartment and make it so cold and uninviting? Believe me, with so much at our disposal in New York, I could turn this home into a beautiful, warm, and exciting little gem. This Designer has failed again!
ReplyWhy all the complaints? It's friggin FREE!!! Hell, I'll take it!
MChickpea -- It's not as "Free" as you think! Yes, you might not have to pay $1.5 million for it, but you'd have to pay approx. 40% of that in taxes, as the $1.5 million it's supposedly worth, will be considered added "income"! So you'd have to pony up $600,000 right out the gate! That's why all these home give-aways that HGTV has done over the years NEVER sees anyone actually live in one! They all have to sell them, just to pay the taxes on their "free" house... One family from Illinois won the Padre Island home in Texas and sadly tried to live in it for 2 months, but their Illinois home never sold, so they couldn't pay the taxes due on the Free House, AND, they said the new home was so huge that it cost them over $3,000 per month just on UTILITIES alone!!! So yeah, I guess it's "free", but not really...
I think it's awesome!! I would love to live there!
ReplyHey, it's free if you win it. I love NYC. I will take it! It's a loft, do you know how coveted they are?
ReplyFurnishings can be changed. And it can be rented out for income and paying taxes when I am not there. I hope, I hope, I hope!
I thought is was well done, and gives the appearance of a much larger apartment. It was a bit too modern for my taste, but would have no trouble living there. I will admit I have seen many designes or makeovers by Vern Yip, that I would much rather live with. But as a give away what can you say, it's great.
ReplyThe furnishings have a loft feel, which is very NYC. It isn't to my taste, but then many of the HGTV houses "furnishings" aren't to my taste. It look nice, just not particularly warm. But then, that's the loft style, which fits in with NYC
ReplyThis is probably the worst make over I have evern seen Vern do. I am not fond of him judging the HGTV new star show either.
ReplyWhat the heck happened to you Vern? Yours used to be one of my fav's on Trading Spaces. Bring Frank back. He makes a place cozy. Not plastic and full of garbage.
I totally agree...I would love to win it and then put every single item in it on the street...ick ick ick for plexiglass chairs...I want warm woods and big comfy sofa and quilts and anything warm and inviting...what are these people thinking of!!!
ReplyAnyone who would not want to live there has to have her or his head examined...new york, new york, what a wonderful town....the apartment was just great....no complaints on this end...what a wonderful anniversary gift...my anniversary is september 6th......
ReplyTaxes, taxes taxes!!!
