Minute makeover

"My bedroom walls have off-centered molding and no matter where I put my bed, it looks wrong!"
-- Scott Delman

THE HOMEOWNER

Scott Delman and his 6-year-old daughter Maya

BEFORE
Can you have too much of a good thing? In the case of molding -- yes, you certainly can. Scott knows first hand how difficult a room full of molding can be. Where does the bed go? Do you work with it, or against it? And how do you balance the blue-and-white color palette?

Enter our Minute Makeover guru, Bob Richter, who's never met moldings he couldn't tame. He played off of the architectural details by bringing in IKEA's Trondheim bed frame with its clean white lines and placing it in the corner to provide the room with some much-needed balance. (And the Sultan Fossing mattress keeps things comfy).

And now for the color pop: Don't be scared, Scott, but Bob choose orange as the accent color -- boy does it accent! Interestingly, a geometric pattern works with the lines of the molding. The room gets another dash of white -- this time, in the form of the low-key Lack wall shelf that serves as a space-saving bedside table for his Textur table lamp and Vikis alarm clock.

And because walls cannot live on moldings alone, Bob brought in a calming seascape from a local flea market to add warmth and personality.

AFTER
Scott has a cool, relaxing spot to rest his head -- and a stylishly masculine room to wake up to every morning.

Love the room and I would have done the samething with the bed. Color excellant!!! Orange?????? I don't know. I would have chosen brown deep rich brown!!! I like all the white trim and plan on doing that in my livingroom, and maybe the whole house. It's okay.

Awful before and worse after, I would just have removed the moldings.

First of all by looking at the guys house I would say he has some money so why not just rip that cheap thin molding down and repaint?, it's not like it's a major thing, for $100 the guy could have did the whole job. But if you are going to have the bed in the corner like that why waste the space in back of the headboard?, put a shelf back there and put a lamp on it or just get a pole lamp and put it back there.

To each his own I guess, I personally hate the orange would have stayed with the chocolate brown.

I would have had to remove all of that molding and repair and repaint the walls. I didn't find the orange bedding attractive at all nor that shelf to be handy to the bed especially with that sharp corner. Maybe this man, who wants a "quick fix", this will do, but I would so prefer to change it correctly once, for the long haul, instead of the "quick fix" method. .Just my taste I guess.

I think the designer could have done a lot better with his choice of bedding. That would make anyone insane in 5 minutes. If I were the homeowner, i'd already be out bedding shopping.

Definitely the bed and the bed in the corner work. However, the shelves and exposed cords look horrible. It looks like college student decorating. UGH1

I don't usually like putting beds in corners, but for this situation it did provide an easy fix. But that ugly mess of electrical cords below the bedside shelf? Sorry--until that's taken care of in some clever way, this "makeover" is NOT finished.

the shelf with all the cords hanging from it looks kind of junky. can eliminate one of them by switching to a classic battery alarm clock like they have at pottery barn. as far as the cord from the lamp I would have mounted a pair of overhead lamp right to the wall behind the bed and you can then hide the cord behind and under the bed. then you don't need a lamp on the shelf. Also, much better for reading. I'm not a designer but it seems so obvious.

Why not just remove the moldings and paint the room a more masculine color? It's STILL PURPLE and looks like a child's room. I suppose this is just an ad for IKEA and their cheap furniture instead of a realistic approach, and buying a new bed and linens was far more expensive than a can of paint and a little elbow grease!

GAAAKK Orange and antique blue ?? !!!! How ugly is that ! ?? I would have put the bed there but changed all the colors and painted the moldings to match the walls.

All of it sticks out like a sore thumb. Where did this designer go to school ???

It's pretty obvious that the mouldings were laid out to have the bed angle out from the corner. But you could have improved the final product more by using small round side tables either side of the bed.
The shelf idea is really bad, not only do you see power cords, but the "ikea" shelf has no design appeal. It is too far away from the bed and creates a negative space below itself.
Also, I would prefer a high headboard that integrates the moulding detail in a nail head pattern over a complimentary fabric. Either dark grey suede or striped wool pattern. The side tables could then be chrome or mirror to add some light the the area.
Give me a call mnext time to help you out.

Oh for goodness sake, just remove the stupid looking molding. Moving the bed to the corner is an improvement, but the room still looks sparse and stupid. Molding need to go and room needs a new color.
