We almost couldn't believe this one, but it's true! If you want a cleaner pool, just throw in a tennis ball. Its velvety surface will absorb the oils left behind on the surface of the water from visitors coming and going. (Which explains why our pool smells of sunscreen sometimes.)

save it Ray, i think "Pearl" is a bot....and your comments, although shared by EVERYONE who reads this, fall on deaf ears.
ReplySeriously suntan lotion is not what you need to worry about. It is the body fluids that are the problem and no tennis ball is going to disinfect or absorb that...
ReplyInteresting Idea as many kids can put alot of sunscreen it a pool. Another idea: We have an above ground pool which we use a long tube sock to remove iron at the start of the year... tie the sock open end to the outlet of the pump jet (in the pool). Iron will stick to the sock. You turn off pump and use bucket to settle sock into when removing it. I also sew ceramic magnets in mine.
ReplyActually, this is a very good idea. Oils, both from sunscreens/tanning oils and natural body oils float on the water. It then sticks to the sides of the pool. Dirt then sticks to the oils, leaving that dirty "bathtub ring" on vinyl or tile sides. What doesn't stick to the sides is sucked into your filter system and is trapped in your filter. Just rinsing your cartridge filter or back washing your sand filter will not remove the oils. In time, they greatly reduce the ability of your filter to work properly, necessitating more frequent replacement of your cartridge or sand media.
ReplyYou are so right about body fluids! I went to a July 4th party and swam in a large inground pool that all the kids were in. I figured, oh well, chlorine will kill all the germs. NOPE. There were parents dunking their babies in pampers in the pool, and I got out when I saw that. Also I noticed very few kids leaving the pool to pee :oP
ReplyAdd to that fact that kids who DID go inside the house to potty didn't wipe well either, or bother with hand washing.........blech!
I ended up will a roaring ear infection that took killer antibiotics and over a month to heal.
p.s. It isn't only the pools you should worry about. I once sat on an patio upholstered chair cushion that was always left outside, and person after person in wet bathing suits sat on. Yep...I got a bad Athlete's foot infection in my crotch! I had never even given those cushions a thought! I NEVER swim with a pool full of kids or sit on anything other than UN-cushioned patio chairs anymore!
