Melding the styles of a glamorous gal and her rugged husband is difficult -- but not impossible.

What happens when a country boy falls in love with a city girl? In this video, we sent our ShelterPop designers on a challenge to meld the styles of a glamorous gal and her rugged husband. Borrowing inspiration from our favorite glam/rustic celebrity couple Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, the Design Influence gals turn an otherwise bland cottage into a city-chic haven for the future newlyweds:

Want to get the look? Follow the tips below to up the glam factor in a quaint room of your home:
1. Choose a color scheme. Because we're working with a wide mix of styles and textures, it's always best to maintain a cohesive element in the space. In this video, our designers chose blue and white as the primary color palette and experimented with different shades, tones and hues to create depth.
2. Don't be afraid to mix textures. By using an antique jar lamp and rattan shade, our designers were able to meld country and city styles into one piece. Get creative and experiment with a wide variety of natural textiles in rugs, window treatments and upholstery.
3. Choose your battles. When melding two very different styles, emotions are bound to get caught up in the mix. In this video, an oversized plaid futon was kicked to the curb, but a framed image of an animal skull stayed. Choose pieces that have sentimental value or will work well in the new space, but don't feel as if you need to start from scratch. You'll be amazed at how existing furnishings can look brand new when incorporated into a different setting!
4. When in doubt, accessorize. Sometimes, fresh flowers and a serving tray will tie a room together faster than a coat of paint. Never underestimate the power of styling!

Even though it's commonly used outdoors, wicker is the perfect material to brighten up your favorite interior room -- and is more versatile than you think. 1. Tie it together. By using wicker placemats with porcelain accents, the mix of formal and informal resonates throughout the table setting.
2. Bring in balance. Because Nicole's dining room table was on the formal side, a more casual dining chair set is unexpected and fun -- it gives the space balance and the right amount of quirkiness.
3. Keep it functional. Slipcovers are your friend, even on an easy-to-clean material like wicker. Bonus? You can alter the slipcovers every few months to welcome a new season or trend!

Design Influence: Wood

Got wood on the brain? With so many varieties of types, stains and finishes, it's often hard to envision which wood works best in your space. Our ShelterPop designers tracked down furniture maker and artisan Michael Hennessy to give us the 411 on creating the perfect wood finish -- by doing it yourself!

To Stain: Michael prefers a foam brush when working with wood stain, as it's simple to dispose of when finished. Simply brush the stain into the grain, let sit for a moment, then wipe down with a dry cloth.
To Wax: Rub wax into the wood in a circular motion with a dry cloth and wipe into the grain. Let dry for 15 minutes, then return to the piece and wipe down for a nice shine.
To Dye: Paint the dye onto the wood generously and let dry. Two coats may be necessary when working with dye.

Michael's trick of the trade? Furniture created from solid wood lasts much longer, so consider investing in a quality piece. An easy way to tell if a piece is created with solid wood is to check the end grain, where you should see the wood's internal pattern.

Ready to tackle a pet-proof home of your own? Check out these simple tips:
1. Upholster furniture in outdoor fabric, which is both stain-resistant and durable. Darker fabrics will work best, as you can count on your pet to track in a hefty amount of dirt and/or dust. Three other great alternatives? Suede, leather or washable slipcovers.
2. Utilize throws to your advantage. Easier to wash and transport, throws are a must for keeping couches and beds fur-free.
3. Stick with light-colored sheets. If your dog sleeps in bed with you, avoid dark sheets that can't often be washed in hot water. Instead, opt for white, fuss-free sheets that can be bleached and laundred when needed.

1. "Just have fun with it." Not sure if that plastic tulip table will match your traditional wooden chairs? Give it a go! Chances are, if you love it, you'll find a place for it in your home.
2. Start with a few pieces. Forget all or nothing -- start with a few 60's inspired accessories and go from there. No need to go overboard on any trend; just stick with a couple of accents.
3. Go with what makes you happy. Decor should make you feel energized, so try some warm, happy colors from the mod palette: red, orange and yellow work well.

Remember, follow these guidelines for a foolproof paint color in your own home!:
1. Just as cosmetics can vary depending on skin tone, paint colors can change when placed against different base colors. Be sure to choose a sample that complements your home's existing surroundings.

2. it is always a good idea to consider the color you're starting with and what you want to highlight. When working with accent walls, be sure to keep your base coat in mind to ensure a consistent color palette.

3. Different colors project different moods. Darker colors are more formal and serious. Lighter colors are more casual and summery. Always keep this distinction in mind when working with color.

Whether you crave zebra, cheetah or cowhide prints (cruelty-free, please!), there are a few rules to follow when working animal prints into your home decor.

1. Mix and match. Yes, surprisingly, you can mix and match animal prints! Don't take decor too seriously, and play with a variety of colors, textures and prints to make your room roar.

2. Accent. Stick with animal print as an accent. This way, you can easily bring the look into other areas of your home --- or designate animal print for a certain season. However you choose, accents are an easy way to introduce new themes into your space.
3. Materialize. Bring in various materials when playing with animal prints -- whether it be wood floors, chrome table legs or tweed sofas. Texture is key to bringing out the best in your animal print!

APPEARANCE
Keep appearance in the forefront of your mind by making sure there is no obvious damage to the piece, i.e. major repairs and/or replaced hardware.

APPEAL
The more rare an antique is, the more expensive it is -- which means you get more bang for your buck when it comes to value and resale.

AUTHENTICITY
When inspecting a piece for authenticity of a certain time period, do your research regarding the form, material and craftsmanship of the piece.

Whether you're longing for a soothing, Zen atmosphere or a seductive, romantic setting, candles can help you achieve the look. Bonus? According to our quirky resident designers, candles make you look ten years younger -- easily!:

Not sure where to start? Here's how to welcome candles into all areas of your home:
1. Votives. Place votives along a windowsill or mantle, or create a sweet arrangement in your fireplace.
2. Floating candles. For a Zen aesthetic, try placing a few floating candles in a glass dish, surrounded by water lilies.
3. Pillars. Pillars look lovely arranged on a vintage tray and tied with a grosgrain ribbon. Try the look as a hostess gift, or save it for your next centerpiece!
4. Alter candles. Line a few outdoor candles to create a perfectly-lit outdoor garden walkway.

Sometimes, a little nip/tuck is all you need. Follow our designers as they transform older furniture pieces into new (and much improved!) statement accents:

A few rules to remember when considering a cosmetic change for your own furniture:
1. Does the piece have good bones? For example, if a chair has a poor frame or less-than-solid foundation, you may want to throw it out, rather than invest time, energy and money into giving it a new look.
2. Have you considered hardware? Sometimes, a few lucite knobs can modernize an antique chest more than a fresh coat of paint. Small doesn't have to mean unimportant!
3. Will it work in your space? It's easy to freshen a piece of furniture, but before doing so, keep your surroundings in mind and be sure that the improved piece will fit in just as well as the original.
