In "Decor By Mood," we tell you how to attain a feeling in your home. Here's how to decorate when your outlook is gloomy.

Gloomy decor can be a beautiful sight and it doesn't have to mean dreary. In fact, it can look quite striking when done right.

Forget glam -- get gloom! Photos: Lonny/Tom Scheerer

To set the tone for your dismal decor, go for dark and hauntingly deep hues of your favorite color. If you love shades of brown, plum or avocado, go for the darkest tone available and don't be afraid of the darker results. A dark room can be incredibly romantic when done right.

To avoid a dungeon-like appearance, be sure to invest in some bold lighting, or opt for dark paint in a room with a bright window. The combination of bright light and dark colors will produce a fantastically moody (and glamorous!) space.

Green can work wonders in a bedroom. Photos: DecorPad

When it comes to the bedroom, avoid black. It can be jarring in an intimate space. Instead, opt for a simple shade of green, which pairs well with somber tones of tan, beige and rust. Lighten the look with soft, light bedding and a few accent pillows to keep the room bright and welcoming.

Books and wood can be gloomy, too! Photos: Michael Smith

You don't necessarily have to go dark to get the gloom factor. Built-in bookshelves filled to the brim with your favorite novels can appear gloomy -- even when placed near bright windows, the heavy pages and spines from a book can weigh down the lightest of rooms -- helping you achieve the perfect amount of gloominess. Opt for with antique and vintage wood furnishings and leave floors bare.

Who knows? Maybe gloomy decor will give you the opposite result -- a cheery outlook!
Your source for modern bedding: Duvets, shams and stylish sheets.

Ready to spice up your bedroom (we're talking bedding, folks!)? I've always been a fan of neutral, traditional bedding, but lately my eye has drifted to the many bold, graphic and modern prints on the market now. With so much great design for the bedroom, why limit yourself to something plain? Check out a few retailers that put the excitement back into the bedroom. Whether your style is flirty, fun or classic, there's something modern for everyone --- at every price point:

DwellStudio
It's no secret we're huge fans of DwellStudio, so admittedly, I often hop over to DwellStudio's inventory first. Not only is this line affordable (especially the Target collection!), but DwellStudio offers a more classic, timeless look than most modern bedding retailers. In fact, I can envision snoozing in their Draper Ash set for the rest of my life. After all, stripes make a lovely neutral and are always in style!

Price point: $200 to $300 (or $50 to $90 for the Target collection!)
I know I've said before that I hate to clean, and I still stand by that statement. But lately, I've been feeling especially inspired to finally tackle the clutter.
Amidst my annual spring cleaning session, I've been collecting buttons left and right -- from closets to couch cushions and everywhere between. What to do with jars and jars of miscellaneous buttons? I thought you'd never ask! Check out these super easy button crafts and incorporate some handmade love into your home:

It's time to put those spare buttons to use! Photo: Flickr, S. Red

Decorate your refrigerator with sweet fabric-covered buttons for an artful way to hang your grocery list. I'd mix in a few magnet-backed buttons for a mix-and-match method that doesn't scream kitsch.

Craving a fun way to use up your spare buttons? Try a simple spring pin-on wreath made entirely of buttons, ribbon and wire. Although this is a great wedding project, I'd pin a few to my inspiration board for a nice springtime touch.

Ever since I first spotted H&M's home collection (with the famous button pillow!), I've kept Curbly's button pillow high on my list of inspiring crafts. Doesn't it look lovely juxtaposed with the hard lines of a mid-century chair?

Don't have a ton of spare buttons hanging around your home? Make a few brightly-colored buttons out of bottle caps for a modern punch to use throughout your home.

Buttons are blooming all over the place! Turn your most cumbersome paperwork into a cute-fest with sweet button paperclips. This craft couldn't be easier and infuses surprising energy into your mundane filing.

Do you love fresh flowers, but suffer from crazy allergies (I'm nodding my head here!)? Brighten your home with a crafty spring bouquet -- complete with button centers.

Have a feature wall in need of a springtime statement? Frame button-inspired artwork with paper, thrift store frames and recycled buttons; it's cheap and chic.

And, of course, a craft round-up isn't complete without a nod to Martha Stewart. Transforming a few spare buttons into a unique clock would make the perfect spring addition to a dreary kitchen.
Today's topic: Favorite sofas.

I've been through a lot of sofas in my day and am (almost!) ready to bite the bullet and invest in a quality, long-lasting sofa for my new home. Yet how to navigate the crazy couch world without paying a fortune for a lemon? Thankfully, our ShelterPop readers have come to the rescue (as always!) with some fantastic options after I tweeted the following question:

"OK ShelterPop followers! What is your favorite go-to sofa that you swear by? Send us your response and we'll feature them on TwiTalk!"

Your answers ranged from kooky to classic, and we've listed our favorites below:

We don't often think of orange as a go-to color for home decor. However, after trolling a photo gallery of sunny, orange rooms on MarthaStewart.com for home inspiration, I was reminded of just how versatile the color orange can be. Sure, it's often hard to find the right shade of orange for your home (pumpkin and citrus and melon -- oh my!), but once you find it, your room can be transformed in an instant.

Here, a look at the variety of ways orange can be used -- from home offices to living rooms, and every room between! This season, spruce up your home with a healthy dose of Vitamin C:

Get beach-y with a dash of turquoise and citrus orange.

The Look: Coastal Chic
The Shade: Citrus orange with a bright, sunny undertone and splashes of turquoise.
The Accents: Pale blue walls and plenty of texture -- glass, leather and natural elements complete the look in this room from Homes & Gardens magazine.

The Look: Traditional with a Twist
The Shade: Burnt orange with a hint of tomato red.
The Accents: Because burnt orange and rust are such standout colors, it's smart that the rest of the space is light and airy with just a touch of green.

The Look: Bold and Beautiful
The Shade: Layered tones of yellow-orange.
The Accents: Try varied shades of orange and yellow with a bold punch of pink for a bold, exciting look.

The Look: Golden Glam
The Shade: Sophisticated orange with a hint of brown.
The Accents: Light and dark greens and a few deep mocha accents transform an otherwise basic zone into a glamorous, tribal hideaway.

A calming boy's bedroom is a perfect home for khaki and orange.

The Look: Casual and Cozy
The Shade: Basic orange in a simple color palette.
The Accents: Adding browns and whites keeps this room grounded while giving off a casual vibe. The sweet artwork and lack of clutter keep things looking neat-as-a-pin.

Can you spot the splurge?

One of these marble round tables is less than $300 -- can you tell which?

Sure, marble is a luxurious surface that commands a high price tag. While we adore the original Rubik Round Coffee Table ($900) at Design Within Reach, there's something to be said for big savings. CB2's version, while nearly identical, is a far cry in price at just $300.

Sometimes, though, you get what you pay for. The pricey DWR option offers floor-protecting pads on the base, stainless steel legs and a solid marble tabletop. The CB2 version goes for more budget-conscious (and lower quality) Carrara-style marble and chrome. Not bad, and for the price, I'd say it's a steal indeed.

A mid-20th century staple: Nesting tables are both pretty and practical. What else can you turn to when you're hosting an impromptu dinner party in your living room? Nesting tables! I love how, when not in use, the tables fit together so nicely, but if you're in a bind and need some extra surface area --- poof: you've got tons! Brilliant.

We rounded up a few different styles of nesting tables to inspire you --- from playful and colorful to classically chic. Here are our finds:
Star Wars dishes from Angela Rossi guarantee an out-of-this-world dining experience.

I'll admit I've never been the biggest Star Wars fan, but when I spotted these crazy Star Wars dishes at Oddity Central, I couldn't help but crave more information. A little investigation revealed Los Angeles-based artist Angela Rossi, the daughter of an antiques collector, creates these unusual pieces of porcelain using "orphaned and unloved antique plates."

Rossi sells these beauties in her Etsy shop for $25 to $75 a piece. While that may sound like a lot, it's a small price to pay for a collector's item, especially if you're looking for a gift for your Star Wars-fanatic brother. Plus, Rossi uses truly fine china: Yoda and the Nymphs (above), for example, is set on a flow blue plate.
Also in Rossi's shop? Cheeky tribute dinnerware for characters across the board (everyone from Pee-Wee Herman to The Bearded Lady!)
Forget elementary school; these chalkboard crafts are sure to dress up your A+ home!

In honor of my sweet friend Shanna Murray and her new chalkboard-inspired, handwritten decal launch (which was photographed against chalkboard!), I've been eyeing new chalkboard ideas this week. Whether you're in need of some inspiring wall pieces or a few crafty ideas to kill some time, look no further than the following five chalkboard crafts to get your juices flowing:

Try adorning your next present with sweet chalkboard gift tags for a simple, unique gift-giving experience. Your recipient will love the look -- and you'll love the endless customization possibilities!

For a statement serving piece, try this cheese tray from Good Housekeeping. It's a wood-framed chalkboard with drawer pulls epoxy-ed on as handles. Genius!

Two great projects using chalkboards and chalkboard paint. Photos: Design*Sponge

Need a lesson in table etiquette? Take a cue from Kate's chalkboard table at Design*Sponge and throw an impromptu dinner party with your new knowledge.

Are you a quirky art collector seeking a new way to display your finds? I'm a huge fan of this fun art display idea, first spotted in the home of Charise Harper. Wouldn't it be such an adventure to transform your art daily with nothing more than a piece of chalk?

Chalkboards, bulldog clips and art? Yes! Photo: Room and Serve

Speaking of art display, I spied the photo at left from Room and Serve. With a few coats of chalkboard paint, some adhesive bulldog clips and your favorite art, you can transform your wall into a virtual refrigerator door. To make the DIY even easier, why not simply invest in a few chalkboard panels and hang away?

Of course, you can easily make any item in your home into a chalkboard craft with a bit of chalkboard paint (even DIY chalkboard paint or colored chalkboard paint!) and some ingenuity. Why not start with your family's message center and create a fun chalkboard letter holder for your entryway?

Clearly, the possibilities are endless. Don't believe us? Check out 5 Uses For Chalkboard Paint You Haven't Considered

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Yes, Please: A Lego Kitchen

Filed under: Kitchen, Your Home, Fun Stuff, Design, etc, News & Trends

Colorful childhood building blocks dress up a creative homeowner's kitchen.

Think LEGOs are a kid's toy? Think again. I've been spotting LEGOs all over the place, from sidewalks to city buildings, houses -- and now kitchens! Our friends at Freshome pointed me to a project from two Parisian designers with a LEGO-inspired island worthy of child's play -- and adult's love.

Hmm, I wonder what happens if you spill a drink? Boasting over 20,000 LEGO pieces centered around an IKEA island, the project took a little over a week. I can't speak to the durability or function, but boy do I want to spend a day in that kitchen!

Admit it; room dividers get a bad rep. Over the years, we've seen more than our share of less-than-stylish room dividers that boast function, but not form. Never one to settle for anything but perfection, I've sourced a few options for homeowners and renters that are blessed with wide, open spaces, but cursed in the privacy department.

With options for every space and budget, welcome to the ultimate room divider resource. Three cheers for form and function!:
Photo: At Home At Home

In "Decor By Mood," we tell you how to attain a feeling in your home. Here's how to decorate a sunny home.

Whether you live in Alaska (with varying amounts of sunlight per day) or are a happy homeowner in the tropics, everyone can use a bit more sun (and sunny optimism) in their home. So, if you and your home need a bit of a boost, why not turn that frown upside down into a sunny, carefree attitude?

If you're sunny:
When you smile people take notice. You might find yourself the center of attention and with just a few bats of your eyelashes, getting just what you want. It's as if you're skipping down the sidewalk with a song on the tip of your tongue and spring in your step.

It's easy to translate your favorite carefree attitude straight into your decor! Here's how:

A lime green wall pulls any space together with plenty of Vitamin C to go around! Photo: Design*Sponge

One of the easiest ways to infuse a bit of sunlight into your favorite space is with a healthy dose of color. Prime example? In the home of Raina Kattelson, as seen on Design*Sponge, a bright lime green wall gives off a sunny vibe and acts as a focal point for a variety of colors, textures and fabrics in the space.

Another surefire way to add sunlight to your home? Go natural. Photo: Villa & Villa

Not much of a color lover? Organic elements, such as wood, glass and stone can provide an at-ease atmosphere and reflect the sun in the most natural way possible. When paired with glossy floors, the area soaks up an incredible amount of sunlight -- giving you (and your home) a natural, organic boost.

Bold pattern can give any room the sunlight it deserves. Photo: Design*Sponge

Finally, give your home a sunny vibe with some serious pattern. In the home of Cara Scarola (also seen on Design*Sponge), the bright, bold patterns make way for eclecticism -- producing the ultimate carefree vibe. Multiply that vibe by the dozens of artwork showcased on the walls and you've got yourself a seriously sunny space!

A few more tips?
-Keep your decor light, airy and bright to let your space "breathe."
-Throw a few mirrors on your walls to instantly reflect the sunlight you do have. The effect will make your home appear brighter and larger!

Happy decorating!
Why black trim and white walls are a "do," and how to get the look at home.

When faced with a choice between black and white, I'll almost always opt for middle ground: Gray. Yet with the recent surge of black trim against white walls, I think I've finally found a love for high contrast.

Light walls and dark trim add up to a look that is surprisingly sophisticated and an unexpected pleasure. While a deviation from the usual choice of light-colored trim, black is a neutral option that easily pairs with whatever your existing furnishings may be. And while guests may not notice your opposite choice in trimcolor, they will see a glamorous, clean space that is both inviting and stylish.

If you need some inspiration to get started, here are a few looks I love and why they're working for me:

In the photos pictured left and below, dark trim and details like the window seat recess and ceiling panels, reflect the rooms' dark floors, creating a well-delineated spaces. By defining the already-wide openings of each room, the contrasting trim creates a widening effect in these two living areas. I love the feminine touches that break up an otherwise masculine spaces. With the use of different materials (glass, steel and wood), the rooms looksput together and interesting -- drawing your eye to each object and beyond.

If you love a Victorian abode, this look is for you! Photo: DecorPad

In homes with light wooden planked floors (pictured below), black trim acts almost as an outline to a home's spaces. The subtle black accents in the furniture offer the perfect weight and contrast for the space. Although many dining areas have lower ceilings, the slight slant of this particular space works well with the pattern of each plank.

Black trim doesn't have to be dramatic! Photo: Design Crisis

For a more masculine look, pair your light walls and dark trim with even darker furniture with plenty of texture -- in the case below, leather. A dark wood floor and gray area rug give the room the perfect masculine accent without overbearing the trim in the space. Because this room has so much natural light, the effect is reflective and glamorous.

Ready to tackle the aesthetic in your own home? Follow a few tips to get the look right:

1. Think about lighting. If your space doesn't have a lot of natural light, do your best to implement surface lighting on tables, floors and walls.
2. Don't be afraid of color. Black and white make a lovely neutral when paired together, so don't be afraid to incorporate your favorite hues in the space. However, do avoid "pop" colors such as neon tones and bright shades, as they may tend to break up the room.
3. Opt for a high-gloss paint color. Like most trims, you'll want a high-gloss or lacquer effect to bring drama to the space.
A big cheer for elledecor.com's recent re-launch -- and an interview with editor-in-chief Margaret Russell.

Amidst a sea of design magazines, few top my list of faves quite like ELLE DECOR. When I caught wind of the newly-released ElleDecor.com, I'll admit I was a little skeptical: Could a website possibly deliver the same level of glossy inspiration that editor-in-chief Margaret Russell produces monthly (and brilliantly, at that)?

The answer? An emphatic "Yes!" With fun, interactive features such as 'Lookbook' (a gallery of inspiring rooms for every taste) and 'What We Love' (online window shopping straight from our favorite editors), elledecor.com is a lovely counterpart to the magazine -- think of the site as the publication's more tech-savvy sister. Don't take our word for it; read below to hear what Margaret Russell herself has to say about the new site:

SP: First of all, we're huge fans of the brand you've helped create and the new site looks fantastic. What does elledecor.com have to offer that the magazine does not?

MR: I'm happy you like it, as it's been a labor of love for me and my staff. Though our site is a complement to the magazine, it has its own mission: Elledecor.com offers even more ELLE DECOR. A great deal of the content is original material, and it can be far more timely -- we can spot something amazing at 9 a.m. and post a photo and blurb about it before lunch.

SP: What are some of the challenges of producing a magazine amidst today's digital age? How is your re-launch allowing for the growing demand of web content?

MR: The opportunities outweigh the obstacles, but the biggest challenge certainly isn't a lack of ideas or content for print or digital, it's balancing edit and tech resources. We have a small team, and literally everyone here works on both print and digital material. Also, since the digital landscape changes so rapidly, it seems as if once you've finessed something it might already be obsolete. We're always keeping our eyes on the future, planning for circumstances that don't yet exist.

SP: Any features you're particularly proud of with the new site?

MR: I'm really keen on ELLE DECOR's LookBook, which enables you to search for photos by room type and design style; we've been adding images from our archives and will continue to do so. And the immediacy of the 'What We Love' mini blogs thrills me. Plus, we seem to love a great deal, so it's current, and fun, and a daily must-click.

The new site is filled to the brim and dripping with inspiration. Photo: ELLEDECOR.com

SP: What can readers expect from elledecor.com, and what is your personal vision for the site?

MR: The readers can expect elledecor.com to be as stylish and inspiring as the magazine but also more helpful, pragmatic, and service-oriented. It offers a great deal of practical information for everything from a quick fix for a dowdy kitchen to a full-fledged renovation project, as well as ideas for chic decorating must-haves, entertaining tips, terrific travel destinations and where to stay, dine and shop all over the world. Elledecor.com's mission is to be the go-to online source for decorating and design. We'll be adding to it continually in the next few months-tools, quizzes, a Designer Registry, expanded resource guides, plus much more.

SP: I've read somewhere that you feel one of the biggest decorating mistakes is a homeowner's inability to edit. How does elledecor.com's re-launch support this belief?

MR: In truth, I think we ALL have trouble editing some aspect of our lives, but my point was most likely that we don't have to live with everything we own all the time. I believe in seasonal decorating-switching your bedding, throw pillows, and other accessories a few times a year when the weather changes (or you get bored). It you want a fresh outlook, the best way to refine your taste and style is to weed out clutter and donate items you don't use to charity, and then look for ideas and inspiration. Elledecor.com showcases what's new for every room in your home, as well as international interiors that reflect every style from contemporary to classic.

SP: And, finally --- what are a few specific projects you're working on in your home right now?

MR: Actually, I'm in the process of finding a new apartment, so I'll keep you posted!

...and we'll be tuned in, Margaret. Congratulations to the team and staff of elledecor.com!
How a simple roll of black tape transformed the look of an entire kitchen.

When we waxed poetic about decorative tape a few months ago, we had no idea what untapped powers a humble roll of tape truly held; that is, until we spotted this black and white geometric-inspired kitchen at Remodelista. Suki, the Finnish homeowner wanted a temporary solution to add interested to a boring, all-white kitchen.

She says on Remodelista, "My love of Inca patterns led to this. Our kitchen was very basic and boring, but since we're looking for a new flat, I didn't want to do anything radical. This costs almost nothing and is easy to remove." To recreate the look all you need are a roll of black tape, a pair of scissors, a ruler and a whole lot of patience.

To get the look without the painstaking process, try the decal route. Blik has some lovely options that work well on a variety of surfaces, and many are removable to ensure a temporary fix.

It's a beautifully graphic look, no? You can find more of Suki's inspirational home on her blog, Varpunen. (I'm a personal fan of the tepee in her daughter's room, in which Suki's love for graphics is once again spotlighted).

Ever since our friends at Freshome posted these 17 cool shelving ideas, I've had storage on the brain. After all, decorating should be fun -- and why should the fun end with shelving? Naturally, we wanted to put our own spin on storage, so here are five additional shelving solutions we're loving at the moment!:
A beautiful look indeed, but does it feels a bit... cold? Photo: Bisazza

When it comes to interior design, my #1 rule has always been to have loads of fun when decorating your space. For me, that means using unexpected items in surprising ways (like potholders as wall decor). Naturally, when I spotted tiled walls popping up everywhere from dining rooms to bedrooms, I was intrigued.

I should start by saying I've never been a fan of tile. I almost always prefer hardwood floors to ceramic tile, and mosaics have never been my forte (I'm deathly afraid of pattern!). So it took me by surprise that I can't help but feel weak in the knees for a few of the lovely, tiled rooms seen here. These tiles give off more depth than paint -- and pack more pattern than typical wallpaper design.

But still, I can't help but wonder: Is the look too cold? Could the space feel cozy with such shiny, modern textures surrounding minimal furnishings? Would it feel less than inviting? Moreover, are tiled walls safe? If you reside in an earthquake zone, I have to wonder if tiles on the wall are a hazard. If you're rearing a few children, I'm leaning towards a definite "no." But for everyone else out there, what do you think? Are wall tiles too showy or unexpectedly glamorous?

The home should be a haven, not a showroom, right? So, let's take a look at some popular options for tiled walls and you be the judges: Are they hot or not? Vote below!

Like most things, I think the key to making tiled walls work is all in the details. Here are a few rules I've compiled to help you get the look, without feeling like you're lost amidst a bathroom showroom.

1. More is more.
Accessories are king when a room is in need of some warmth. Try decorating a tiled bedroom with gauzy curtains, statement lighting or interesting bedding to draw the eye to your warm furnishings. With shelving likely out of the question, consider a decorative finished bookcase to showcase your favorite reads. Books are a great way to add texture and visual interest.

2. Pay close attention to pattern.
Small patterns tend to swallow a room whole, so be aware about tiling a small space with small pattern. Instead, opt for a large pattern in a neutral color palette (shown at left), or break up the tile with a solid neutral (shown below).

3. Break it up.
Avoid hard surfaces and boxy furniture when your walls are tiled. Instead, opt for soft, upholstered furniture and curved pieces. On the left, a circular table offers a nice contrast to the modular tiles and the upholstered dining room chairs are the perfect fix for an otherwise not-so-cushy space.

A shag carpet and white solid wall break up the tiled look -- bringing warmth and light to the space.

4. Fluff up the space.
Add textured elements to your tiled room, whether you choose to bring in fresh flowers, books, faux plants or a shag carpet (shown above).

Color injects some much-needed warmth into any space! Photo: Luxury Interior Design

5. Go bold.
You know what they say -- go bold or go home (or maybe that's just what we say). Try a bright color for maximum impact (shown above). The color will bring a vital warmth to the space, add depth and instantly add some vibrance to up a cold room.

So, now that you're well-versed in the ground rules -- would you tile your walls? Is the price worth the aesthetic or are you content with a patternless wall? Tweet us your thoughts at twitter.com/shelterpop.
