He leaves the toilet seat up, you forget the dry cleaning. And you're driving each other crazy. Nip the tension with advice from top relationship experts.

Whether you're married, dating or somewhere in between, if you're living together chances are you and your partner have had a few tense conversations about each others bad habits. From the household budget and chores to carving out a little "me" time, no doubt these issues can be some of the hardest to deal with.

Conflict at Home #1: Money
"With each new stage in their relationship, couples reach a deeper level of intimacy," explains Christine Arylo, relationship expert and author of Choosing Me Before We. "It can be threatening because you are letting someone in. As a result, we tend to put up our defenses, and it comes out in icky ways, such as arguing over whose turn it is to take out the trash or how you'll spend your savings."

The biggest trigger of them all? Money. "It's the number one issue that breaks couples up," says Ian Kerner, sex and relationship counselor and New York Times best-selling author. "It's something that has to be discussed but fairly. We all come into a relationship with all sorts of habits. Some of us are frugal; some of us love to spend. Either way, it's crucial to constructively express your money values to one another."

Kerner's top advice? Take a proactive approach. If you've noticed your bank account taking a dip from dining out way too much, reign it in! Instead of discussing where you'll be eating, call your partner and say here's what I'm cooking tonight or send them a grocery list suggesting they shop and you'll cook.

"Rather than arguing about your issue, do something tangible to make the change," says Kerner.

Arylo agrees and stresses the importance of focusing on one issue at a time. "Our feelings about money usually stem from fear, the fear that if we run out we can't survive," she says. "So when something negative happens, our fears bubble up and we tend to project them onto our partners."

To counter that, Arylo suggests tackling issues specifically rather than piling on other points. Need to discuss the bills not being paid on time? Talk about that one issue and take your feelings out of it too. "It's important to remember that whatever the dilemma is, it's not a direct reflection of his love for you," she says. "Once you love someone you're always in love. It's more about his habits and issues with money."

Conflict at Home #2: Personal Space
Same goes for the battle for personal space. "If he likes to shut the door and jam to his music or head out for guys' night once in awhile, it's not a personal vendetta against you," explains Arylo. "Don't take it personal. If it bothers you, most of the time the other person doesn't know the impact they are having on you."

Kerner agrees. "The best couples are the strongest individuals," he says. "They don't do all things together at all times. It's important to recognize that you both need your personal space both inside the home and out, so plan accordingly." Need suggestions? Sign up for classes or schedule nights out (or in) with your pals and keep each other informed.

Conflict at Home #3: Splitting up the cleaning
When it comes to the dreaded household chores, make a plan. If one of you feels as if you're carrying the bulk of the burden, sit down and divvy up what needs to get done. Arylo suggests breaking it down by the tasks each person enjoys doing (cooking, walking the dog), what can be outsourced (housecleaning or laundry service) and finally, what just needs to get done no matter what. That way, she says, you'll have clear expectations of one another's responsibilities.

Kerner has a similar, yet enticing approach to splitting up the chores. "I think making lists and setting up deadlines is great, it keeps you both in check," he says. "And if that doesn't work, I like to introduce something I call chore-play. I've read studies that suggest a woman is more likely to want to have sex with their partner if they help out with the chores." His tip? The next time your partner gets down about his household duties, remind him that chore-play can certainly lead to fore-play later on.

Conflict at Home #4: Try a peace offering
Finally, if you're still struggling with your issues, bring home a bouquet of fresh flowers. "Studies have shown that flowers create more love than almost anything else," says Arylo. "When you're in a difficult situation, having fresh flowers around helps to open your heart up and readies you for that dreaded conversation."
What's new in tile design? Expect intricate carvings, metallics and lots of customization.

There are few materials that can cause a stir in the hearts of design enthusiasts like tile can. Tile and all of its beautiful intricacies ranks right up there with a good fabric, lush carpeting and solid wood. And the recent introduction of new styles, sizes and details has inspired exciting new trends. Here's a rundown of what's hot in tile design.

It's All About White
"Today, everything is white," says Nancy Epstein, Founder and CEO of Artistic Tile. "We've noticed our customers asking for all types of shades and variations of white," from classic bright white to muted grey. Epstein says that this is part of a larger, overall trend of customization in the luxury market. "Customers want to customize, they want what they want and they want it their way, and if it's a particular shade of white they seek, it's up to us to make it happen."

Tiles shown are Frameworks in Linen. Photo: Artistic Tile

Interior designer John Loecke has also been seeing lots of white, however he's also been noticing boldly colored ethnic-inspired designs emerging from companies such as Ann Saks. Expect tiles that look like they walked right out of the fashion tents at Bryant Park!

"I'm seeing ikats, arabesques and suzani-inspired patterns in bright colors," he says. "Anything blue or purple, from soft pastels to deep, moody hues. People are looking for ways to make their homes more personal. These special patterns and shapes can do just that by allowing them to reference a bit of history or an area of the world they love."

Sustainable Solutions
"Of course, the biggest trend in every industry right now is focused on sustainability and eco-friendly products," says Epstein. "Due to both their endurance and classic aesthetic, tile and stone can last longer than anything else in your home."

Loecke is also seeing a large eco-presence when it comes to tiles. "I'm seeing lots of faux wood looks, especially from manufacturers in Italy," says Loecke. "Even though these tiles come from Europe, they're porcelain, so they're extremely sturdy and very affordable." What's even cooler is that many of these tiles are designed to be laid in a random plank fashion, just like real wood, making it very hard to tell that that they aren't the real thing!

All About Dimensions
Intricately carved tiles that take their cue from art are also gaining popularity. "Bold, sculptured patterns offer a dramatic, beautiful wall," says Epstein. "Now that we can offer customers dimensional tiles, they love it!"

Carved tiles from the Ambra collection, shown here in Lake Blue in a bathroom , make the perfect addition to achieving a serene feeling in any bathroom. Photo: Artistic Tile

A great example of this technique is the Artistic Tile's Ziva Lotus line (shown below), which is all carved in India. "We were in a hotel in Tunisia and the panel behind us was beautifully 3-D. That was the whole start of our quest for dimensional wall tiles and carved stones."

Shown here is Lotus Gris from the Ziva collection. The sculpted squares offer homeowners gorgeous three-dimensional tiles that resemble artwork. Photo: Artistic Tile

Major Metallic
"My favorite new looks are copper and rose gold; they are especially beautiful when infused into glass tile," says Epstein. Additionally, rather than only using metallics as accents, the company is also stocking metallic field tiles, which account for a huge percentage of tile installations. Why? Field tiles can be made of any material and are basic, single-color tiles that are unadorned, meaning they have no patterns or other adornments.

Do It Yourself
As budgets seem to be perpetually smaller, so many homeowners continue to embrace do-it-yourself options. Of note is the Cliks line of DIY tiles from Daltile, available at Home Depot. These porcelain tiles are manufactured here in the U.S. and don't require any additional grout for installation. Instead, the tiles click together quickly and easily using the company's patented Uniclic system.

Gorgeous Glass
"I'm really enjoying working with glass tiles right now," says Loecke. "Whether they are made from recycled glass or not, glass tiles are a great way to add a little sparkle to a space. We just finished covering the face of a client's fireplace in large 24-inch square mirrored tiles and they reflect light beautifully, adding a soft glow and shimmer."
Not everyone is storing wine in a fancy cellar. Whether you're a wine collector or simply enjoy sipping a glass or two with friends, we have smart storage solutions for every budget.

We may not all have the funds or space for a built-in cellar. However, there's something elegant and sophisticated about displaying a wine collection. Here, we've gathered a few creative, unique and budget-friendly options for storing your wine at home.

Bottle Project via ReadyMade Magazine. Mailing tubes are sturdy enough to hold heavy wine bottles and can be ordered in bulk via Uline.com.

If running out to purchase a wine cooler or an expensive rack isn't your thing, you're not alone! Many fellow wine lovers have gotten pretty creative when it comes to storing their bottles. One of the quirkiest ideas we've found is this Mailing Tube Wine Rack project from ReadyMade magazine.

The tubes were cut to fit the space and carefully layered under a shelf to ensure maximum support. While it may not be the most attractive options, we give the genius behind this idea props for making use of such a mundane material.

Stainless Steel Rod Wine Rack via ApartmentTherapy. Spacing the rods just right provides the balance necessary to keep this couple's bottles of vino from shattering on the floor.

Over at Apartment Therapy we found another creative use of an interesting material, this time it was stainless steel rods. Lauren and Eric Wendlandt of Framework Design through-bolted the rods onto a walnut wood wall, spacing each so that the wine bottles would be properly supported.

A more practical approach could be this clever vertical wine rack, also spotted on Apartment Therapy. The DIY couple attached Vurm bottle holders from IKEA to three pieces of stained plywood, which rest on the floor and are anchored to the wall by another piece of plywood at the top and a shelf at the bottom. So clever!

If putting your bottles on display isn't important to you, try a few unexpected places to store them instead. Of course, we find this Wine Bar Treasure Trunk fascinating with its built in dividers, but really, you could use any storage piece. How about making room in the hinged ottoman in your living room, that built-in drawer underneath your bed or maybe it's time to repurpose your child's old toy box.

Of course, if DIY isn't your thing, there are tons of storage options out there. If space and your budget are limited, opt for a cool yet compact table top option. At $24.95, Crate & Barrel's Countertop 5 Bottle Wine Rack is a great option for apartment dwellers. It's sleek and compact and since it's made from aluminum, it won't ever tarnish.

Sometimes when space is tight, it's best to look up! This wall-mounted gear-style wine holder from QVC is a quirky solution for corralling bottles. Made of hardwood, handpainted and distressed, this conversation-piece holds six of your favorite vinos.

If you have a bit more space and a few extra dollars, do like they do in the French countryside and store your wine in the rustic Riddler Wine Rack from Z Gallerie. Designed like the ones used by French champagne-makers, the rack allows bottles to rest on their side, an ideal way to preserve wine -- it keeps the wine in contact with the cork, preventing air from spoiling it.
Don't save your timeless blue and white china for the table. Here are creative ideas for elevating your pieces from dishes to decor.

Who isn't drawn to decorating with blue-and-white china? Its classic colors are soothing, representing the sky and sea and its ornate designs can make any room feel warmer and more homey. Plus, the dishes themselves have such a rich history, they have become a true classic among many countries and cultures. (And they're influencing room design as well.)

The china originated in China's Tang Dynasty in the 14th century when artisans began making white porcelain, then decorating it with intricate designs using cobalt oxide, a blue pigment.

Blue and white is one of the most popular color combos used in kitchens across America. Photo: Country Living, Of Spring and Summer

In the 16th century, Delftware, a later version of the Japanese original, was born in the Netherlands. Potters, inspired by pricey porcelain, began coating their clay wares in a tin-glaze, which gave the pieces the look of porcelain without the high price tag. And the English proudly boast ownership of Wedgwood and Jasperware, all classics we covet here too in the U.S.

Today, there are many variations, but all come back to that striking blue and white color combo.

Vintage, modern or reproduction, no matter what your blue-and-white dish collection is worth, we guarantee you are very proud of it. So much so, in fact, that you'd much rather put it on display rather than pack it away. To help inspire you, we found some fresh, fun and inspiring ways to shine a spotlight on your blue and white dishes.

Expand to the Bedroom and Living Room
Everyone thinks to hang plate collections in the dining room and kitchen but think about other rooms in your home where you might showcase your collection. One of Design*Sponge's editors Amy Merrick has a collection of blue and white dishes over her bed, while designer John Loecke created a simple yet interesting "backsplash" using an assortment of dishes for the stove in this Midwest colonial home (see image below).

Rather than filling the space above a fireplace with an expected mirror or piece of art, why not arrange your beloved collection as the editors at Martha Stewart Living did here. It's a guaranteed conversation starter.

Plates can also be the perfect size to dress up those small, odd-shaped areas in the home, such as above a window. We love this idea (third photo in the slideshow) from Country Living. The homeowner simply lined up her blue and white dishes above her windows.

An Excuse to Bring Out the Blue and White
The next time you're creating a centerpiece or floral display, work in your collection. How gorgeous is the contrast of this pink Hyacinth arrangement (top photo) against the blue-and-white pieces from London blogger Of Spring and Summer.

Of course actually using your plates during a dinner party is a fabulous idea too. To set her table, blogger Rose Garden Romantic layered a few mismatched ones and topped them off with a vintage birthday greeting postcard. So sweet!

Make Cool Stuff With 'Em
Sometimes a piece of our beloved collection chips, falls out of favor or you simply find a treasure that is not quite food safe. If that's the case, we say get creative like these sellers on Etsy.

How clever is blogger and stylist extraordinaire Sweet Paul? He suggests painting half of a piece of pottery all white to give it a modern spin.

ShabbyNChic transformed a blue-and-white dish into a beautiful cupcake stand by attaching a glass candle holder. To do this at home, we'd recommend using a strong glue such as a clear epoxy glue.

Lastly, Louanacreations turned a beautiful blue wine glass upside down and married it with a plate and pretty beads for a gorgeous display piece.

Take It Out of the Kitchen
Of course, if you love your collection, then put it to use! But instead of just using it, say, as your everyday dinnerware, get creative. We love the idea of taking a blue and white tea cup saucer into the bathroom to use as a soap dish. A dessert plate placed on a bedroom nightstand or vanity can easily hold jewelry and remind you each and every day just how much you adore your collection.

Ready to add to your collection? Royal Delft Pottery in the Netherlands is one of the last producers of authentic Delft earthenware and offers personalization to plates and more.

Looking for something a little more tongue-in-cheek? We have a crush on Lovegrove & Repucci's New York Delftware. The clever designers used iconic New York symbols such as graffiti, taxicabs and hot dog carts to modernize the Dutch-style pottery.
Here, designers share why they're once again dressing their beds with one.

A bedskirtis the unsung workhorse in the boudoir. Typically used to hide an exposed box spring, frame or to protect legs from scratches, a bedskirt can also hide the piles of lost socks, old magazines and any other unwanted items that usually linger under our beds (yes, we're talking about YOU, little dust bunnies!).

In the last decade or so, bedskirts seemed to fall out of fashion, thanks in part to the popularity of sleigh beds, upholstered beds and other types of platform beds that don't need the coverage down below. But with everyone needing a cozy bed to retreat to these days, designers seem to be responding by dressing up every aspect of the bed, even the bedskirt.

Serena & Lily

Serena Dugan, co-founder and designer at Serena & Lily says that she thinks of the bedskirt as an extension of the headboard. "We love the idea of coordinating the bottom of the bed with an upholstered headboard. By bringing some fabric around the perimeter of the bed, you have a low-impact, surprising way to present a design or color that complements other elements."

Dugan says that layering is a popular concept in bedding right now. She predicts we'll see more blankets and decorative pieces, even a return to more tightly made beds. "Adding a bedskirt or a duvet folded at the foot of a bed is a fun way to change this up. You can introduce new colors and test drive new patterns. Everyone's always looking for a way to freshen up and using layers is definitely a way to do it."

Pine Cone Hill is another wonderful source of inspiration when it comes to layering. The company is known for its bold, bright prints, patterns and lots and lots of color. Here, they're showing how to have fun with its striped Dawson bedskirt by pairing it up with quilts and bedding in various prints; somehow it all coordinates back to one another.

Serena & Lily

Another one of our favorite looks is a two-tone bedskirt. As you can see, a clean, tailored look doesn't necessarily mean all white. Instead, the two-tone bedskirt adds a bit of unexpected color to the bottom -- and helps conceal dust a bit more than, say, an all-white one would. "It's a nice way to ground the bed," says Dugan.

Dwell Studio is fond of a tailored, clean look when it comes to beds. According to the team there, modern bedskirts seem to be much more structured, simple and box-shaped rather than ornate or frilly. They prefer bedskirts to "disappear" -- and not steal the attention from the rest of the linens. Their selection of textured, matelasse bedskirts add a little extra something to look at and feel.

For those who appreciate a little frill, a bedskirt is the perfect item to indulge your feminine side. We love Pine Cone Hill's Flamenco Pink bedskirt. Talk about girly! This bedskirt is packed with personality and those pink hues would punch up even the simplest bedding set. For a softer look, we're loving these scallop and embroidered options from Serena & Lily. "Sometimes a little detail such as a scallop edge is just a nice consideration paid to what can otherwise be an afterthought," says Dugan.

 Martha Stewart

Finally, we know bedskirts can be an added expense so why not make one yourself? Back in 1994 our favorite homemaker, Martha Stewart recommended transforming a piece of fabric or tablecloth into a bed skirt with a few simple folds and a hem. We love this idea, as it saves you money and lets you get a little creative. Mixing in an outrageous print with your solid bedding or vice-versa can really take your bed to a whole new level of fabulous.
Three top designers dish about the hues they're excited to mix, match and play with in the new year.

Good news everyone! When it comes to design and decorating (and yes, fashion too), this year it's all about color, color and more color! And with 2011 kicking off a brand new decade, it's finally time to bring a little happy into our homes. Here, three fresh color combinations we're noticing right now.

Honeysuckle & Peacock Blue, Honeysuckle & Taupe-Grey
It made perfect sense to us when Pantone declared Honeysuckle 2011's color of the year. This perky shade of pink represents the optimism that's finally peeking through across the country.

"I definitely think honeysuckle is an optimistic, playful color," says interior designer and color expert Eileen Kathryn Boyd. "Even the name sounds happy and fresh. It's also a color that I think a lot of people look good in."

Interior designer John Loecke agrees and points out its global influence as well. "Pink is the navy blue of India," he says. "Just like navy or denim is a classic American color, pink is a go-to shade in India because it's so flattering. Everyone wears it and you'll see it in all the homes and hotels there."

And what do they pair it with in India? "Strong shades like a deep turquoise or this peacock blue that is emerging as a hot hue," says Loecke. That seems just about right for what's happening here too.

Boyd is also using peacock blue with honeysuckle. "I'm actually working with this color right now with a client," says Boyd. "I really love this peacock blue, this green-cast turquoise we're seeing right now," she says. "Since honeysuckle has a pink cast, it stays light and fresh with that greenish-blue shade."

Boyd also recommends grounding such a vibrant hue as honeysuckle with a fresh neutral such as grey. "When you're using such a bold shade, you need a neutral and grey is sticking around," she explains. "But it's warmed up, think of a taupey grey, which grounds all that pink perfectly."

Peacock Blue & Oregano Green
Author and interior designer Elaine Griffin has also fallen for peacock blue and is having fun pairing it with a color she's calling oregano green. "It's not a celadon, not lime, but a brighter green that looks and feels fresh and is going to take the place of last year's orange as the accent color of choice."

We've noticed her prediction coming true already as bloggers such as Habitually Chic and our favorite shelter and fashion mags such as Canadian House & Home, House Beautiful and Elle are talking about and showcasing this shade of green too.

"I think these shades of blue and green just make sense -- it's a nod back to the sky and grass," she says. "No matter where that pendulum is swinging when it comes to color trends, nature is always an inspiration."

The blogger Little Green Notebook recently posted her entryway makeover featuring this exact color combination, with a few touches of warm gold, which Griffin is also predicting to be big this year.

Juicy Colors
Bright, bold colors in general are making a huge comeback. As evident by the color combos, we've already showed you, we'll see more of yellow for sure. Juicy shades of yellow and fuchsia will be making noise with the colors we've already mentioned (grey, oregano green, peacock blue) and you'll also see black make a comeback as an accent color as well.

"Yellow is being introduced again in fashion and in the home," says Boyd. "My favorite is that happy canary yellow. It's bright and warm, like a ray of sunshine and feels stimulating to look at. I am seeing yellow paired again, with that taupe-grey for a modern feel."

As for black, Boyd loves it with fuschia. "I love black. It is the absence of all color so it truly is a statement maker," she says. "I recently saw a spread in Elle Decoration UK and the room was painted in this fuchsia pink and all the trim was black. It was just so striking." Boyd also points out that using black as an accent is a great way to try a new, bold color at home without making a huge commitment.

"Shades of yellow, fuchsia, deep turquoise and even orange are all tropical, sunny colors," says Loecke. "There's this global influence that's helping to push forward these happy shades and Americans are embracing it. It's all about mixing them up in a way you're most comfortable with."

We agree. Just look at the living room Loecke recently designed. His use of big, bold colors and patterns is so inviting, we're ready to move right in!

And we don't blame her: In addition to receiving a fabulous new $20,000 built-in, custom storage system Murphy was also treated to a visit from Peter Walsh, host of the new "Enough Already!" show on the Oprah Winfrey Network and author of "Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Fat?". (You also might remember his great tips for ShelterPop readers on the no-nag way get your family to clean up!)
Murphy, a writer and book editor, works from home and while she is used to having papers, files and old manuscripts around, lately her piles of paper have expanded to include her mother's medical bills and documents pertaining to her father's estate. "Everything ended up in my home office, which also shares space with our guest room," says Murphy. "It was all in one spot. Plus, with the bed eating up most of the guest room, my closets were bursting." After trying to organize her home over the last year and a half, Murphy knew this contest could be the solution she was looking for.
"My cats were constantly seeking a space to perch or lounge, which often ended up being piles of paper," she says. "And of course, if you don't make room for them, they'll do it for you, moving stuff out of the way themselves!" Her cats inspired Murphy's contest entry, which depicted them unhappy with her mess. When the time came for her consultation with Steve Rothgery, designer for California Closets ,she made sure her cats were considered.

"Steve and the team at California Closets were just great," says Murphy. "No request was too strange for them to take on and that really impressed me. They built planks for the cats to walk on, as well as an organizational unit above my desk, which the cats love to lounge on top of."
For her desk area, they constructed a fusion slot-wall, typically used in garages, so that she can swap in and out photos and other bits of inspiration for the various projects she's working on. They also installed a Murphy-style bed that was built into the wall to free up space in the guest room and free up the closets too! "Now when I open up those closets, which hold my wardrobe, I can quickly and easily put together an outfit, rather than struggling to find something to wear," Murphy says. After the storage system installation, Peter Walsh stepped in and worked with Murphy to go through her files, teaching her a few hard lessons on what to keep and what to toss! (She called him a "sweet drill sergeant!") The result is a more manageable system for her mail and paperwork. "When the mail used to come in, I would just plop it into a large basket and let it pile up," says Murphy. "Peter taught me one of his mantras, that cutter is a decision deferred. So now, as soon as the mail comes in, I act on it, separating out what needs to be paid or filed."

Purging her unwanted stuff also provided Murphy with a sense of community and charity. "This experience forced me to not only decide what I need and don't need, but I was also able to pass along my unwanted items to someone more in need of them," explains Murphy. "For example, through the website Freecycle.org, I sent a cat tree to a family with a disabled cat and I also recently donated some of my old science fiction manuscripts -- which take up a lot of space -- to a museum."
Of course, once the project was complete, Murphy was a bit anxious about keeping it all organized. "California Closets designed a beautiful system for me and Peter was enormously helpful, but at first I was terrified to turn my home back to what it used to be -- cluttered," recalls Murphy. "But now I've learned how valuable space really is. Clearing away the clutter has allowed me to not only stay organized but to be more productive and more creative."

The house isn't fancy, but it's what they dreamed about as kids.

Tom Vecchione and Tom Baione, best friends since childhood, grew up near one another on Long Island. One of their favorite teachers would often share happy tales of living close to the ocean, and the two childhood friends, who still remain close many years later, began dreaming of one day owning an oceanside home together.

In 2001 when the two Toms spotted a home for sale on Jones Island, a barrier island off Long Island's south shore, they decided to go for it. While the home's remote and unusual setting attracted them -- it is elevated several feet above the sand and is about a thirty minute drive to the closest store -- it made it challenging to renovate. And it needed renovation.

A photo of the house as it stands post-renovation. Photo: Tom Baione

Originally built in the 1940s (with some renovations completed in the 1950s), the cottage was used by its previous owners only on weekends. The floors and windows were in good shape, but the rest needed help. Vecchione, a New York-based architect and former HGTV Design Star contestant, and Baione, the director of the library at the American Museum of Natural History, knew the cottage needed a facelift.

Rather than tearing it down and rebuilding from scratch, they decided to work with what was there, since it was the "green" thing to do. Both are proponents of incorporating environmentally friendly ideas into design, and they decided they would use as much salvaged, re-purposed and collected materials as they could find or already owned to make their cottage the perfect vacation getaway.

Avid collectors of just about everything kitchy and cool, the two had quite a lot to choose from, including antique carriage lanterns, discarded flooring from a neighbor and the bathroom tiles in Vecchione's childhood home. All of it found its way in to the charming cottage by the water, which has become a place to relax and connect with other friends from childhood.

Below, clockwise from upper left: An exterior shot of the home before the extensive renovation, a view of the porch before it was transformed into the new kitchen, a shot of the old kitchen, and Tom Baione (left) and Tom Vecchione (right).

When they bought the house, it had cement tiles on the exterior, which made it look ramshackle. They were worn from years of wear and tear, thanks to the cottage's close proximity to the salt water. The pair treated the exterior to cedar shingles and clapboard, trimmed in crisp white to show off the unique variety of salvaged windows (such as the casement windows in the front of the home, seen above) and elements used to give it its makeover.

The home greets visitors with a charming front porch and a grand door; they found the door discarded, on a street just off Madison Avenue in New York City. It originally belonged to a majestic brownstone, and now shows off its elaborate details (a large center brass doorknob included) to guests here at the cottage. The blue door perfectly offsets the gorgeously faded dhurrie rugs peeking up from the floors.

The house is small, only 1,100 square feet. There is one bedroom, a sleeping loft in the attic, one bathroom as well as two porches; one has been transformed into the cottage's cheery kitchen (more on that later).

In the daytime, the pair spend most of their time in kitchen, since they do a lot of entertaining, and by night its time to relax in the living room. "We love to gather here because it reminds us of our summers growing up, spent at Lido and Atlantic Beach, here on Long Island," says Baione.

The cottage is decorated in shabby chic, beach house style. Accent colors are reminiscent of blue and green sea glass, and mismatched chairs are paired throughout. Walls are painted a crisp white or left the color of natural wood. Even though the space is small, there are numerous windows, so the space is filled with natural light.

Photo: Tom Baione

The open and airy kitchen was originally an outside porch before it was closed in. Vecchione and Baione decided to keep the original flooring as they felt it "shows the life of the place." It also allows the eye to focus on the duo's extensive collection of blue and white china. The pretty collection is happily displayed against the white painted walls. The cupboard was salvaged from a neighbor's trash.

Another favorite element in the kitchen? There's a cabinet built from a neighbor's discarded floor boards. After cleaning the boards, Baione decided to leave the surface intact as he fell in love with the gorgeous patina. We are very glad he did! The distressed green coloring is perfect for the seaside location.

Finally, the front porch is home to another one of our favorite elements. If you look through the first room, off into the back, you'll see a gorgeous stained glass window peeking in. It was rescued from an old apartment building in New York City. It's a sparkling little jewel in this gem of a house.

Indian corn is a treasured, iconic element of Thanksgiving, so what better material to use to create festive tabletop decorations for the holiday! Whether you play up its golden husks or vibrant kernels, Indian corn centerpieces are sure to bring smiles to your holiday table.

Here, we've rounded up five crafty creations from magazines and blogs that make use of this modest material in a charming way.
Gloriously Gilded

We love how lifestyle blogger Eddie Ross gave a modern lift to Indian corn in the current issue of Woman's Day. He gives the corn a festive shine by spray painting the ears gold. Lined up around a simple hurricane, they make the perfect table lantern. A luxe velvet ribbon keeps everything in place!
Rustic Chic

For a simplified version, take a look at this centerpiece from Ross' blog. He actually used this project as inspiration for the project above. We love the varying colors of the Indian corn husks and the rustic look of the twine that keeps the corn standing upright.

My mom has hosted Thanksgiving for as long as I can remember. My aunts, uncles and cousins as well as my immediate family would gather at our house on Long Island for turkey and all of its trimmings. And my mother, who had a house full of people to feed, took her job as holiday cook very seriously.

Photo: Lauren De Bellis

I took the day pretty seriously too. Growing up I was her little helper, grabbing whatever she needed (spices, butter from the fridge) as she cooked. I'd help clean up and set the table. The next day I'd sit beside her and entertain our guests. As I've grown older, I have taken on more responsibilities (when I was 12, I could finally help serve the food!), and at 33, I'm about to host my first Thanksgiving for my family -- with my mother as a guest.

Well, sort of. Call me the co-host. My mother isn't ready to retire completely. She looks forward to hosting Thanksgiving all year long, and she has done so since she was a little girl growing up in Brooklyn, New York. She would shop with her dad for ingredients, cook beside her mother and help them both set up the numerous folding tables they used to accommodate their many guests. She and her sisters would eagerly await the arrival of guests, looking forward to the chocolate turkeys they would bring along for them.

Photo: Lauren De Bellis

Determined to carry on the tradition, Mom worked hard to involve me in the festivities growing up. Just as she would rise to the smell of a turkey roasting and a sweet potato souffle in the oven, so did I. Just as she and her mom stopped their preparations to catch the Radio City Rockettes perform at the end of the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, so did I. And each year I learned a little more about playing host.

By the time I was in high school, I was the one making our family's treasured stuffed mushrooms (a ricotta cheese filling is our secret!), rather than just watching Mom make it. Post-college, I wasn't just setting the table, I was helping her decorate it. She asked for my opinion and input of where her handmade wreaths should go and how to arrange her treasured collection of Thanksgiving-themed Christopher Radko ornaments. When I began working on photo shoots as a magazine editor, she let me indulge my inspirations, creating festive centerpieces such as a cornucopia filled with beaded faux fruit or fresh flowers to go along with her decor. She always encouraged me to contribute my own ideas alongside hers, and I loved it.

As I've gotten older and moved into a home of my own, it's been harder to sit back and be the helper. I'm stubborn, and I like to be in charge, just like her, and I've had to bite my tongue when she was doing something I disagreed with. But in recent years, Mom and Dad have gotten older -- they're in their late 50s. Mom has suffered from scoliosis her entire life, and as she's aged, it's become harder for her to do what she used to, especially cook at the stove for long periods of time.

This year, Mom is trusting me to carry on her traditions. After all, she gave me a basket full of Thanksgiving goodies at my bridal shower -- everything from a large roasting pan and turkey lifter to leaf-painted goblets and autumn-themed hot mitts.

I feel ready to have Mom as a guest at my table. I know her recipes by heart, everything from her stuffing secrets to her stuffed mushrooms. Mom has even suggested we try some new recipes; she's been tearing some out of magazines for me. My husband is making stromboli, a tradition that began a couple of years ago -- Ok'd by Mom, of course.

Still, I won't be cooking the turkey. The masterpiece of our family feast is still all hers, and I won't be touching it until it comes out of the oven. My mom cooks her turkey in a brown paper bag, carefully sprinkling the bag with water every 15 minutes so it doesn't burn, and her bird is always moist and delicious.

Change has been coming to our Thanksgiving table each year. We're always embracing new guests, and we are 15 now. We made room when my cousin married, then when I married, and more recently when my cousin's twin daughters were born. Those little girls are now the center of our holiday with their own little spots at the table, special holiday dishes, adorable turkey chair covers, and of course, there are always two chocolate turkeys on the table for them now, all courtesy of Mom.

This year, when Mom sits down for Thanksgiving dinner -- my first Thanksgiving dinner -- she'll have a chocolate turkey waiting for her too. I can't wait to see her face.

My Mother's Top Thanksgiving Tips
A seasoned hostess shares her top tips for a well-organized and delicious Thanksgiving.

Perfect Prep

Shop for as much of your grocery needs as you can, at least two weeks in advance. Don't forget to pick up seasonal favorites like apple cider, nuts and figs!

One to two weeks before, refresh dinnerware, glasses, utensils, silverware and serving pieces. Wash what needs to be done by hand and the rest load in the dishwasher.

Make sure you have enough clean oven mitts, hot pads, kitchen towels, dishwashing soap, scouring pads, paper towels and any other cleaning products you may need.

Wash and air dry your tablecloths and napkins (if applicable). Fold neatly on a hanger until you're ready to iron and set the table.

Prepare stuffing the day before, as well as any other baked dishes. It's best to leave yourself with the least amount to do the morning of, as you will be focused on cooking the turkey and any other last minute tasks.

Set your Thanksgiving table the night before. To prevent dust from accumulating, turn glasses upside down and place napkins on the plate.

If you bought a frozen turkey, make sure to thaw in refrigerator three or four days in advance. I place a kitchen towel under the turkey to soak up the water as it starts to thaw.

While cleaning and preparing the turkey, don't forget to remove the giblet packet from inside.

Set your alarm to wake up early on Thanksgiving morning. How early depends on the suggested cooking time for the weight of your turkey, planned in accordance with your dinner time.

Make sure to let your turkey sit at least 20 - 30 minutes before carving.

Apple Garland
We love this idea from The Bride's Cafe of stringing up apples to create a festive display that can be used indoors and out. Think about mixing different varieties for a rustic take on apple decor or use all of the same for something simple.

Glowing Votives
Apples can easily be transformed into a natural vessel for holding candles. Cut off and scoop out the top portion of the apples, just enough so that a tea light fits comfortably inside. We love lining them up on a table for a quick hit of apple decor, or try them on a fireplace mantel or decorative shelf.

Delicious Vase
Another way to use an apple as a decorative element is to completely hollow it out, fill with water and use as a vase for a small, casual arrangement. How pretty would this be on a table for a dinner party?
A look at this season's top trends for the home.

Fall is officially here and that means it's finally time to say goodbye to summer and give our homes a little autumn pick-me-up. Can't wait to find out what the new trends will be? Us either, so we asked Sabrina Soto, HGTV designer and Target's newest Style Expert for Home and Estela Lugo, trend expert for Trend Bible, to break down what's hot and how to bring it home.

"Great colors for fall this year are gray, lime green, coral, turquoise and espresso brown," says Soto. "Gray could be a classic, neutral foundation for a room, while the brighter hues will bring warmth to the space and add great pops of color."

Crafted from aniline top-grade leather, the Eddie Accent Chair pops in this on-trend peacock color, $1199. Photo: ZGallerie

Trend Bible is also forecasting bright, bold unexpected colors. In addition to the colors mentioned above, Lugo predicts we'll also be embracing lively tones of red, orange, yellow and rich dark blues. "These colors are getting noticed again as homeowners continue to bring a vibrant, uplifting mood back into their homes," she says.

Case in point: At the recent New York International Gift Fair, Lugo spotted lots of quirky, colorful accessories such as patchwork quilts and pillows in bold color combinations. She points to the beautiful hand-blocked prints of John Robshaw's bedding collection as an example. She also noticed lots of mixing and matching of patterns, almost as if we're all ready to dive in and do things our own way.

"Design is going away from the idea of expected, perfect interiors and more about individuality," says Lugo. "The items we're choosing for our homes, especially the colors we're selecting are really more about how we relate to our homes than what a specific trend is."

John Robshaw's new collection is an example of the bold colors emerging in bedding. Photo: John Robshaw

That's good news for those of us not ready for these fall brights. But if you're aching to bring home a touch of glamour, try accessories in pale subdued colors such as pink and gray mixed with deeper shades of dusty plum. "There is a heavy influence from Paris this year," says Lugo. "You'll see a lot softer, feminine touches to help us all hunker down for the season."
Of course, softer doesn't mean somber -- expect shimmery items to wake things up a bit, like a bold mirror or a sparkly chandelier.

"Another big trend is lucite," says Soto. "For example, a lamp base made of lucite adds a bit of glamour to any room and the best part is that you can find it at affordable prices." Soto directed us to Target's assortment of mix-and-match Lucite lamp bases.

Fashion will continue to play a big role in home this season too. Sexy pleating was the rage on the runways earlier this year and at the recent Spring 2011 shows, and we're expecting it to emerge in home decor as well. Look for origami-inspired pleating on pillows and bedding. Zippers and studs will continue to make an appearance. Oh, and say goodbye to those crisp black silhouette patterns, says Lugo. "Shapes are morphing; they're becoming more organic, softer and a little more undone as we all start craving more handcrafted goods in our homes."

Photo: Walmart, Target

There's one fall trend that never seems to go away and that's bringing nature indoors for that finishing touch. "Flower arrangements using hydrangeas, burnt orange calla lilies, seed pods, burgundy roses and pumpkins all help to create a cozy fall setting," says Soto. "As the season progresses, welcome in cinnamon- or pumpkin-scented candles and create centerpieces made of gourds too."

Hosting friends and family at home can be tons of fun, but sometimes it's hard to know where to begin. Celebrations come in all shapes and sizes, so to help us navigate what it means to entertain today, we asked experts to share their top tips.

Party Prep
Anna Post, a great-great granddaughter of etiquette and entertaining guru Emily Post, says the secret to a successful party is planning. "I can't stress it enough," she says. "Planning ahead allows you to become a guest at your own event. If you're running around at the last minute, you miss out on spending quality time with your guests."

Post, who co-wrote the recent book Emily Post's Great Get-Togethers with her sister Lizzie, recommends creating a detailed timeline as far out from your date as possible. On this list should be everything from menu-planning, shopping -- all the way up to getting dressed the day of! "Do as much as possible beforehand, so when it's party time, you're ready to go. And work in one extra hour. I don't know anyone who couldn't use that extra time right before a party," she says.

 Photo: Oh Happy Day

Entertaining and food expert Jeanne Benedict agrees. "No one ever wants to turn into a 'Hostzilla,' so do as much as you can ahead of time. Even though you're likely to shop for your fresh ingredients right before the event, make a list so you know exactly what you need and work that shopping time into your schedule." And she says, don't try to be perfect.

"I always say, know what you do best and let yourself off the hook for the rest," she says. "If you're a star in the kitchen, put your energy into the meal. Crafty? Then make a killer centerpiece. Use your talents to help you shine."

A relaxed host is able to tend to guests, rather than being holed up in the kitchen for the entire party. When we wrote about Jordan Ferney's rooftop party, we were smitten with her sense of style. But the vibe captured in her photos was just as seductive -- the relaxed feel of the party seemed to reflect the laid-back style of the host.
A Modern Menu
When planning what to serve, keep the focus on your talents -- and on your guests. David Stark, New York-based event producer and author of the recently released David Stark Design, always serves a delicious entree during a dinner party, but often skips a sit-down appetizer. "I leave out treats to nibble on before we sit so that my guests are in control of how much they truly want to eat before sitting down to the main meal. Plus, it takes the pressure off of preparing lots of courses."

If a sit-down meal seems overwhelming, go for a buffet instead. "Invite friends over for an open-house type cocktail party," suggests Stark. "I love the idea of having a buffet set up with all kinds of yummy appetizers that can be combined into a gracious meal."

Need some inspiration? Turn to the past, says Benedict. "I usually reinvent recipes from vintage cookbooks with new ingredients." For example, Benedict recently served her party guests rosemary-infused marshmallows. "An unlikely flavor pairing maybe, but they were a hit!"

In addition to your menu, cocktails are sure to be at the top of your to-do list. While signature drinks seem to be a popular trend, our experts actually suggest a more casual, personal approach.

"If you're just starting to stock your bar, I suggest having at least three bottles of liquor at home, such as vodka, gin and scotch," says Post. "But really, I think it depends on knowing your guests' tastes. For me, my friends and I love champagne, cava and prosecco dressed up with something special like elderflower liquor."

Stark has a similar approach. "I like to have a slim array of options to keep it simple for me and my guests," he says. Instead of signature cocktails, which can sometimes be tedious to put together, Stark stocks up on the basics: beer, wine, prosecco, vodka and scotch, as well as a variety of mixers, fresh citrus and olives to provide plenty of mixing opportunities for his guests.

Décor Do's
Dressing up your party can be another challenge, especially when it comes to your table. "I find the old ideas of matchy-matchy table settings to be quite boring, actually," says Stark. "I am much more interested in eclectic collections of tableware that have been gathered over time, layering china (a salad plate over a charger from a different set, for instance) is much like layering an outfit when getting dressed."

And what about the notion of one grand centerpiece? "The single floral centerpiece is by no means the rule of thumb," he says. "I create multi-leveled still-lifes that combine flowers, containers, candles, fruits and objects to great effect." Putting the effort into such details lets your guests know just how much you care.

"I'm a big believer in giving your guests some 'wow,' says Benedict. "Always give your party some personality, infuse it with what inspires you. The better your party looks and feels, the better time your guests will have."

Today, why this modern neutral is turning heads in the design world.

Whether it's a calming dove gray or a much more dramatic charcoal, we can't get enough of this go-to color. Neither can interior designer Mary Nolte, owner of Mary Nolte Designs and Kaleidoscope Color Consulting. Nolte has been tracking the emergence of gray and is bringing it into many of her clients' homes. "I absolutely love the way gray looks. It's part of my favorite color combination actually, which is black, white, red and gray," says Nolte. "Gray, like beige, can go in so many directions."

And it combines well with numerous colors, like blue, green, even yellow, making it a perfect neutral.

Yellow and gray make the perfect pair.

One color combo that has recently caught Nolte's eye is gray and yellow. "The colors together are just so fresh and trendy," she says. "I really love how they play off one another." She loves it so much that when Nolte helped her sister decorate her East Hampton, New York home, she introduced chartreuse to liven-up the gray-based living room.

While yellow dominates the happy space shown above, found in a house tour on Apartment Therapy, the gray in the upholstered table and file cabinet ground the palette in a subtle way.

In addition to using this hot hue in accessories, Nolte is using darker shades like charcoal on living room and bedroom walls. "A dark gray wall can be really dramatic," she says. If you're a little bit cautious but still want to try it at home, she suggests painting a smaller room, such as a bathroom, especially if you have marble or tiles with some gray in them already. "That way, it's less of a commitment," she says, "but it gives you the opportunity to really play around."

Keep an eye out for gray-colored flooring too. Some designers are staining floors in different shades of gray. "It gives natural wood a nice, sophisticated update," she says.

Consider pairing gray with other neutrals, like white and tan, as shown in this bedroom at the Crosby Street Hotel in Manhattan. The result is a beautiful, soothing color scheme that you'll want to replicate in every room.

This convertible ottoman may just be the smartest piece of furniture around.

After a 10-year hiatus, the family-owned Castro Convertibles (of Castro Convertibles Sofa fame) is relaunching the brand for the next generation of space-saving furniture seekers. First up? The new Convertible Ottoman ($499, including shipping for a limited time) converts into a single 75-inch long bed, sized just right for a child or adult to sleep on.

"It's so versatile," says Bernadette Castro, daughter of Bernard Castro, who founded the company in 1931. "It starts out as an attractive ottoman with a slipcover that you can use as a coffee table or extra seating during a party. Then, in a few minutes, you'll have a bed for overnight guests." It's available in chocolate brown or taupe, shown above.

It's comfy too. The ottoman comes with a five-inch thick Castropedic mattress that's supported by wooden slats, so your guests (or your snoring bed mate) feel nothing but mattress.

To transform the ottoman, first you take off the removable slipcover -- then simply pull out the bed. Want a visual? Just as she appeared as a little girl in the company's first television commercials, Bernadette has passed the torch to her granddaughters. The duo is now starring in the company's new ads and how-to videos online, demonstrating how easy it is to use the ottoman.

In a time when we're all either downsizing or just trying to make the most out of the space we do have, we're happy to welcome back Castro Convertibles' clever solutions!

Looking for more storage solutions?

Silhouette window shadings, shown here in the Bon Air fabric, softly filter out the light so you can sleep through the night. Prices start at approximately $424. Hunter Douglas

Natural light is both beautiful and healthful (hello, vitamin D!), but sometimes we just want less of it. Aside from abruptly waking us (or a sleeping infant) from sweet Saturday morning slumber, too much light streaming in from the windows can also cause distracting glares on computer monitors or worse, faded fabric on a favorite sofa.

"Sunlight is a natural energy boost, but it also has its downside," says Sally Morse, director of creative services for Hunter Douglas. "Natural light needs to be managed, and the proper window treatments are the best way to do it."

Finding the right treatments can definitely be a challenge, especially with so many options available. It's important to educate yourself about what's out there and also what your needs are.

"If blocking out the light in your bedroom is your top concern, figure out which direction your window faces," says Morse. If it's east-facing, then your windows probably get lots of direct sun in the morning. She suggests drapery that has black-out lining. "If you're choosing blinds or shades, go for something that's opaque to diffuse the light," she says.

When shopping for opaque blinds or shades, always check the product's opacity rating. This will tell you just how much light will actually filter through. For example, the Hunter-Douglas line of Duette honeycomb shades diffuses up to 100% of natural light and is available in four levels of opacity: sheer, semi-sheer, semi-opaque and opaque.

Not sure what's right for you? Morse suggests taking a sample of each opacity level outside and holding them up to the sun. "You'll find out very quickly just how much light you'll be blocking out," says Morse.

Another option we find appealing is a trend in top-down/bottom-up options for shades. Several manufacturers are offering this smart design, that allows you to let some light in while still keeping say the bottom half of your window protected. Great for rooms like the kitchen, bath or even your bedroom, there's also plenty of options to choose from. For example, Levolor has the top-down/bottom-up design feature as an option for their cellular, woven and roman shades.

If your heart is set on horizontal blinds, focus on slat size. According to Morse, the thicker the slats, the more coverage they will provide. This is one of the reasons we like Christopher Lowell's line of 2" wood blinds for Smith and Noble. In addition to providing lots of coverage, they come in a variety of wood finishes such as Walnut, Blush and the pretty Rosewood.

Finally, if you have south- or west-facing windows in your room, you'll most likely get a lot of heat and glare from the sun. To protect the fabric on your furniture and flooring, choose something with a UV filter already built-in. "Most people don't realize how quickly the sun's rays can fade fabrics," says Morse.

Prices start at approximately $202 for a 24" wide by 36" high shade. Hunter Douglas
I've only ridden a horse a few times in my life and have never played polo (how many of us really have?), but I am so in awe of the strong, beautiful and graceful animal and the equestrian lifestyle it represents. The elegance and sophistication of it all is so glamorous that I had to find out how to incorporate some of it into the home. "Equestrian style to me is all about displaying the accouterments associated with riding or polo," says Heather Clawson, New York City-based interior designer and Habitually Chic blogger. "It can be as simple as placing a pair of riding boots in the entry hall or displaying new or vintage ribbons and trophies won at a horse show. Even a plaid blanket thrown over a chair could evoke the feeling."
We love how this homeowner mixed in other classic pieces such as the velvet riding helmets. Photo: Country Living.

As far as the history of equine style, the Brits, with their impeccable attire for polo matches and fox hunts across the English country side, are certainly a huge source of inspiration. Some of the details culled from the country homes, stables and clubhouses in England include deep, rich paint colors such as burgundy, hunter green, gold and saddle brown, fabrics in houndstooth or tartan plaid and classic furniture detailing such as nailhead trim.

But you don't have to travel all the way across the pond to achieve this look. American designers continue to embrace this style, reinterpreting it in a more casual way. Clawson directed us to Ralph Lauren Home, where you can find lots of great furniture with the equestrian look. "To make the pieces look more authentic, I would accessorize with vintage and flea market finds. Besides boots and trophies, you could display polo mallets and velvet riding helmets," she says. Following her lead, we checked out Ralph Lauren Home and fell for the Modern Equestrian Dresser. With its mahogany finish and leather-wrapped pulls, it's the perfect way to add a subtle touch of the equestrian life at home. We also love the company's line of fabrics in menswear plaids, checks and pinstripes for pillows and upholstery. Other iconic elements to look for include jockey silks (vintage Hermès scarf anyone?), racing programs and other equine ephemera. However, be mindful of what you choose, based on where you live."Displaying riding boots or saddles look best if you actually ride horses or live on a farm," says Clawson, "But anyone can display beautiful vintage paintings or black and white photos of horses."

We love the subtlety of this black and white horse photo placed in an entryway. The homeowner is sharing her fondness of the animal without overdoing it. Photo: Country Living.

If cost is an issue, Clawson has a few tips that can help you get the look for less. "An easy do-it-yourself idea is to frame pages from a book or equestrian calendar. If you are a good photographer, you can frame your own photos of horses at a race track or polo match." Other fresh ways to bring this look home is to seek out more modern interpretations. We love the idea of this faux driftwood horse sculpture in an entryway or this white resin horse head mounted to a living room wall. If you like the look of show ribbons, you can buy them in bulk on auction sites like eBay -- or if you're crafty, make your own with this easy tutorial.

This Wall Mounted Horse Head and Faux Driftwood Horse sculpture, both available at Z Gallerie, bring a little bit of equestrian style into your home in a modern way. Photo: Z Gallerie.

For even more inspiration, Clawson, who recently blogged about this style herself, suggests looking to books and magazines. "To really understand this style, take a look at the book 'Equestrian Style: Home Design, Couture, and Collections from the Eclectic to the Elegant by Vicky Moon'," she says. "Also, recently there was a great spread in Elle Decor magazine of the Kentucky home of fashion designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka. It's perfect for inspiration." It sure is. In their stately-looking library, the couple showcases a riding print just above a makeshift bar cart stocked for cocktails. It's the perfect place to relax with a refreshing Mint Julep in hand after an afternoon of riding.
Decorating rules soften, and the new modern decorating gets personal.

Decorating used to mean following specific rules that promised to transform our homes into the drool-worthy ones found in our favorite magazines. Craving country? Look for farmhouse tables, baskets and faded florals. More traditional? Then heavy drapery, fringed pillows and leather club chairs are for you. Follow the rules, buy what you're told and you'll be happy.

Not so fast. There's a new, modern approach to decorating that's brewing. Design enthusiasts everywhere are leading the way and reinventing the idea of just what modern means to them and loving it.

"There's definitely a new modern style emerging right now," says blogger and lifestyle expert Eddie Ross."It's this mixing and matching of different styles from different time periods. We're making our own rules rather than having someone else dictate them for us. For so long there's been a certain lack of personalization in design and I think that's where this new approach is coming from."

Ross finds this freedom of mixing things up and even altering furniture and accessories to fit one's lifestyle to be liberating. "I love the idea of say, taking a traditional-style coffee table and updating it by having a sanded-edge mirror cut to fit the top. That little touch of glamour is just enough to transform an ordinary table into something that I will absolutely adore," says Ross of a recent furniture makeover for The Nest (above), which transformed traditional, hum-drum nesting tables into modern showstoppers.

Making the most of what you have and embracing current technology and creativity to do so, is a huge part of this new modern revolution says Estela Lugo, owner of ModernDose.com, an online home furnishing web site.

The new modern is all about quality: Well-made and well-desinged pieces like the Ito Space Saving System (left) and Lace Carpet (right).

"I think we've all realized how important it is to embrace what truly makes us happy in our everyday lives," she says. "Whether it's a beautiful lace rug handmade using recycled materials or a functional piece of space-saving furniture (above), to me, the new modern means seeking out well-made, well-designed items that celebrate what's important to me."

Of course, at the end of the day both agree that to really embrace this new modern style, we have to take the time to get to know ourselves. "Knowing what you like and don't like is half the battle," says Ross. "Once you do, finding what you love is a piece of cake."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

How to Vacation-Proof Your Garden

Filed under: Gardening, Flowers, How-To, Tools

With a little prep work, your garden can and will thrive while you're away.

You may give your garden lots of TLC all season long, but what happens when you're about to leave on vacation? The thought of leaving your prized flower beds unattended for a week or more can be unsettling. But don't let your plans put you into a panic, says Steve Wagner, senior product manager at Plow & Hearth. "If you've invested the time throughout the season to mulch, water and clean-up regularly, you'll be in good shape," he says. "Plus, there's plenty that can be done before you leave."

First, weed and deadhead, or pull off, spent blooms. This will help ensure that water is reaching your plants and not being slurped down by the weeds. "That way, you'll encourage new growth upon your return," says Wagner.

Next, you'll want to make sure that your flower beds are properly mulched. "Plants and flowers that are well-mulched have a greater ability to retain water. If you've already laid down mulch earlier in the season, just top it off with a fresh layer. Reinforcing that protective barrier is the best way to help your greens hold moisture longer and keep new weeds out."

Of course, making sure your garden is watered while your away is a must. A thorough watering just before heading out the door is one way to handle it, but to keep everything well-hydrated for the duration, you might consider investing in a water timer.

"They're a must if you'll be away for a long period of time," he says. "Whether it's a simple mechanical timer that screws right onto your garden hose faucet or a more advanced programmable one, you'll ensure that your plants will get the proper water they need."

Ken Novak, nursery merchandising director at Lowe's, suggests pairing a water timer with a soaker hose. "It's designed with tiny holes lining all sides, so when it's placed on the soil's surface, the hose flows water directly to the roots of your flowers, plants or shrubs." To keep this flexible, lightweight tool in place, Novak suggests using a few U-shaped floral pins to anchor it into the ground.

Also, if your flower beds contain annuals, add some fertilizer. "In mid-to-late August, you should still fertilize every two weeks until the fall sets in -- it will help kill off frost later on in the year," explains Novak. However, if you've got perennials, skip this step. "By now, perennials have nearly completed their life cycle, so it's safe to stop fertilizing."

And don't forget about your potted plants; group them together out of direct sunlight and go for self-watering planters. No need to replant if you don't have them; you can purchase a self-watering conversion kit for under $20 that will easily work with your existing flower pots. They're ideal for vacation situations," says Wagner. "Simply fill them up before you leave and you're done."

Finally, if you plan to ask the neighbors to water for you, Wagner says make it as easy as possible for them. "Group your potted plants together and show your neighbors exactly where everything is and what you'd like to be done so you don't come home to any surprises.
