Flintstones-like house in Portugal

This Portuguese house bears a striking resemblance to a famous cartoon home.

"Flintstones. Meet the Flintstones. They're the modern Stone Age family. From the town of Bedrock, they're a page right out of history." We all remember the song and the hit TV show that chronicled the lives of Fred and Wilma Flintstone and their neighbors Barney and Betty Rubble.

While the Flintstones' stone house was a cartoon fantasy, there's a real house in Portugal that bears a striking resemblance to Fred's house in the town of Bedrock. (The photo above depicts a real home in Portugal today.)

Located in northern Portugal, this unusual house, known as A Casa do Penedo (literally 'house of stone'), is said to have been built between boulders found on the site.

According to Treehugger.com, the unusual structure was built in 1974 as a family's rural retreat. While Barney might have found Fred to be a nosy neighbor, that's nothing compared to overwhelming attention of real-life curiosity seekers and architecture enthusiasts – the homeowner of the stone house, Vitor Rodrigues, has been forced to move out of his house.

While you might be thinking, 'Who'd want to live in that stone hut in the first place?" a video of Vitor Rodrigues showing the interior of the house to the Portuguese media shows the house to be quite cozy on the inside. And Rodrigues himself? He looks proud and pleased to own A Casa do Penedo, but somewhat exasperated by all the attention.

I like the aesthetics of the house, but other than that, I'm just too old to appreciate its intrinsic value. When I look at this house, I see NO running water, NO electricity, NO indoor plumbing and NO WAY I'd want to spend more time than a walk-thru there. I guess my idea of cozy is a little different from the owner's.

Hey, Mikey...First of all, you're lacking in your own intelligence, noting your writing skills. So get off of your high horse on that alone. Secondly, the quote was "WOULD adore," which means they obviously realise that Fred Flintstone IS a cartoon character. The belief is, that, were he a living, breathing entity, that this place would be a home after his own heart. So why not try and relax, and figure out some way to appreciate the mild humor in it? Christ, I've seen rabid animals with better temperment!

I came across a house just like this in an old book during my studies on Dr. Edmund Skorvatch (fascinating character, researched the phenomenon of pneumonia that is contracted in a hospital). Apparently, a recluse in his later years, he had a rock house built on the outskirts of the village where he retired (can't recall the name, but I know it was somewhere along the Irish coast). However, this was towards the end of the 19th century so I don't know if it still exists.
Doctor S. is rumored to have been a loner and quite the curmudgeon, though - unlike beloved Fred Flinstone.
I guess you really can't judge a man by his abode!

Much swankier than the living quarters built into and under Big Rock, California, in the desert on the way to Palm Springs. It's the place where they used to hold the annual Flying Saucer Conventions. What a gas that was!
